5 Fashionable & even FREE Ways to Help Tsunami Victims in Japan

If you’re like me, you want to know how you can help- now, and fast. Here are Mai chosen 5 fashionable, easy, and even FREE ways of how we can offer our support and love to our fellow brothers and sisters out there in Japan:

1. Get Textual w/ Red Cross: I LOVE TEXTING, especially if it’s actually going to be of help! The Red Cross is amazing at making it easy for us to help from anywhere.  Similar to their efforts to help Haiti after the earthquake in 2010, Red Cross is accepting donations either online or via text message. Ready? Just text REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10 from your phone (you’ll be prompted to confirm with a second text reading YES). (When Haiti’s earthquake struck in early 2010, the Red Cross was able to raise over $20 million by people donating through text, so imagine what we can do together the 2nd time!!)

2. Put Your Paws Up: As you all know I’m totally a lil monster, and Lady Gaga is rallying us to support the relief efforts in Japan with a new wristband available on her online store. I’ve already bought a few for myself!

The white “We Pray for Japan” wristband sells for $5 online, but we can add an additional donation, which goes directly to the Japanese people.

Read more: http://newsfeed.time.com/2011/03/13/lady-gaga-designs-wristband-for-japan-earthquake-relief/#ixzz1GXvnM6tV

3. “Like” The following Facebook Page: Perhaps one of the easiest ways to donate is to hit the “Like” button for the “Dog Bless You” Facebook page.
Explore.org is donating $1 for every like that they get, up to $100,000.

4. Tweeting Power: To all mai Tweeples out there, you can harness the power of your Twitter account to do some good for the people of Japan. And trust me, I’m so not a Twitter pro, but I managed to simplify here for even myself!

Earlier this morning, Twitter published a blog post detailing ways you can help with the relief efforts. Not only have they updated Japan’s mobile website with the latest information on the disaster, but they have also published a list of hashtags to tweet and/or follow related to the crisis.

Here are some key hashtags to remember!

  • #Jishin: focuses around general earthquake information
  • #Anpi: a hashtag for the confirmation of the safety of individuals or places
  • #Hinan: Evacuation information
  • #311care: a hashtag regarding medical information for the victims
  • #PrayforJapan: A general hashtag for support and best wishes for victims of the crisis

5. And the final, easiest way EVERYONE can help Japan at anytime and anywhere is to PRAY. You don’t need to be anywhere specific, and it certainly doesn’t need to be formal. Just speak from your heart, and PRAY hope, relief, community, and HEALING over this country. And PRAY we as Americans do everything we can to unite our efforts tirelessly in love. AMEN!

Dear God, thanks for choosing Olivia to be my mom. And God, I pray she never ends up on my show.

P.S. She wore this to church in Harrisburg, PA.

The picture had to be taken 4 times. Why?

“Mom, get off the rug so I can get your shoes in the pic.”

“No. Mommy want it in. It’s da Purple Carpet, more famous for me.”

Prayer Box: The Good News About Bad News…

..is that it leads you to better news.

Last week, a group of hope-filled people gathered together at 10 AM on Runyon Canyon to put up Prayer Box 3.0. Because words can’t even describe how the amazing way it all happened, I have this to show you instead:

I still can’t get the memory out of my head. Different people from all parts of the city coming together to help and watch faith in action. It couldn’t have been a more beautiful day watching the painted designs from Emiliano Moreno match the opening sky, and the actual sun painted by my brother Daniel peek out between the clouds. My favorite was filling the box with prayers from the old box, and having people who brought their children write out prayers to fill the new box.

On to the bad news. That night, I received prayers from NYC, to Hong Kong, and even South Africa to put into the box. The next day, no more than 24 hours later, I hiked up to the box to put these prayers in and found this:

Somebody had completely torn down the box. There were prayers strewn everywhere, and the sun ray was broken into pieces. It was the most horrible thing I could ever imagine being done. More than just the box being destroyed, I couldn’t believe all that love and time dedicated from our creators the Gentle Giant, James, our carpenter Dan from our friend Kay, and painters Emiliano and Daniel. Honestly, it’s taken awhile for me to get to a place where I could sit and write this blog about it. However, since then I have prayed peace and connection for the person who did this.

Ready for the better news? Our Gentle Giant, James, and I are already brainstorming how to bring the box back. There is always a reason for everything that happens, and I’m actually really anxious to see how this story unfolds. So keep sending me your prayers, and I promise the same way this box brought so many wonderful people together, it will bring an unexpected story that will bless us all.

Prayer Box is BUILT…and an inspirational painter has stepped forward.

I still can’t believe my story of finding James, designer of Prayer Box 3.0 took place just a few weeks ago. The next part to this story gets even better.

The night James W. Thompson and I met, we said the best grace over our yummy burgers and sweet potato fries: that this Prayer Box would be brought to life through a collaborative community effort. It wasn’t too long before James had an exact image in his mind of how this box could look, with even his own personal meaning:

During this time, a wonderful Twitter follower named Kay heard about my determination to make a new box. Kay stepped forward to twitter me that she had a wonderful friend who was interested in helping us make the box. To quote Kay, “Dan is a wonderful, interesting, talented man.” Talented…and insanely FAST! This passionate carpenter by day, blue-grass folk singer/musician by night` took James’ Prayer Box designs and built this below within days of receiving our request:

I KNOW. Wait for it. This story ain’t even done yet.

So if you all know me, you know I’m obsessed with fashion. What makes me even more wild is meeting incredible talent who are able to translate fantasy into wearable pieces. Mr. Emiliano Moreno is my living day fairy Godfather. Blessed with surreal vision and creativity, Emiliano has created one of a kind designs for me on my Style Network show “How Do I Look” that I would have to pinch myself to realize could be real.

With pieces like this, I’d be jealous to learn that God could pack more talent into this big heart. Well, now I’m Emiliano’s frenemy, after Emiliano Facebook messaged me that he not only designs, but is also an artist with oil painted murals on ceilings in estates, paintings of TLC hanging at the Met for the Exhibit, and works hung at the Metro Museum of Art in NYC. And is excited to bless us with his vision of painting our Prayer Box.

So here’s what you need to know about this story. It keeps getting better and better, and it all starts with a mustard seed of faith. When you KNOW in that pit of your stomach something is MEANT TO BE–chase it with everything you’ve got.

Emiliano is stepping on and the box is dated to be completed within 10 days. On the morning of Oct 2, this Prayer Box team will be hiking up to Runyon Canyon together to put this baby in place. And of course you’re all welcome to join! Reply back here if you’re interested to join and we’ll of course send you deets.

Pray it Forward yall.

Prayer Box is BACK

There have been many incredible stories in my life where I ask is that “Odd? or God?” This one was no exception.

As many of you read a few posts back, my prayer box was recently vandalized and destroyed. It was incredibly disheartening to me when I first discovered the remains. But after receiving help from various strangers MERE SECONDS later to gather the scattered prayers, I was invigorated to not only restore the prayer box better than before, but also to involve as much of the community as possible in this project.

I started by tweeting and blogging about my plans, and I have been further inspired by the response. The Prayer Box has touched so many people and many of you came forward to offer your services to help restore it. Thank you! Although I received great offers to take on this project, I knew there was a specific someone who was meant to take this assignment. So I waited.

One night I was watching Cupcake Wars because, well, cupcakes are dope. As I sat there getting kinda jealous over how a mere cupcake could look more delicious than even me in my best dress, onto the screen loomed a huge, Jolly Green Giant of a man. No, seriously, this guy was ginormous, and he introduced himself as the carpenter to construct the stands for each baker’s cupcakes.  After listening to the bakers’ wishes, the jumbo-sized guy stylishly designed and created exactly what they wanted. As I watched, I couldn’t put my finger on it but what I saw so big and magnetic about this man had nothing to do with his size.  Either way, I knew one thing: This man is the person meant to help me create a new prayer box. When the show ended, I studied the credits for his name. Ugh, nothing came up! I was devastated. The next day I got to work with my assistant, making our top priority to find the name of this man. For hours I reached out to Food Network, scoured the internet, and reached out to industry contacts. Nothing. That night I went to bed bummed. Have you ever had that feeling where all odds are against you, but you just know that the opportunity was given to you for a reason to own it? It’s the same feeling I had in 2006 when I decided to become a television host, the same feeling of discomfort when I have an urge to encourage a stranger who needed it, and the same feeling that lead me to build the box when I was told it wouldn’t work. So I did what I did then that got me to where I am now. I prayed for courage. “God, hook me up with this man if he’s meant to be the builder of this box.”

The very next morning I went at it again to search for this man’s name. I IMDB‘d every episode and looked up every name of carpenters and set designers on the show. From there I eliminated female names, then like true stalker style, I facebook searched every male name. 2 hours later, as I was nearing the end of my list, I type in James W. Thompson, and booyah, up pops that familar gentle giant face. Um. Add me.

Immediately, I thought to friend him, but then I took a moment. That could come off as obtrusive and weird. So instead I sent him a facebook message titled, “Stalker? Sorta.”

Guys, I wrote James an essay. Told him about the Prayer Box, how I saw him on TV, and how I thought he might be the perfect person to help rebuild the box. Not more than a couple hours later I got a short message back saying he would love to help. Oh, and this photo:

Yes, this is a picture of his adorbs poodle, Rocko, STANDING NEXT TO THE BOX!

(If you got goosebumps from that, you jumped the gun. We’re not even at the best part.)

So we met, and guys, he was even bigger than I imagined. And I’m not talking about that size..but that magnetic presence I saw onscreen? After listening to James speak, I realized what it was. It was his heart.

Over our sweet potato fries, James shared his story. He is a frequent hiker to Runyon Canyon and a huge fan of the box when he discovered it with his pooch Rocko. He loved its inspirational message to pray it forward and the hope it brings others. On the same night I was watching his episode on Cupcake Wars, he was listening to a pastor on the radio that was discussing faith. When James shut off the radio, he said a little prayer himself and did what many of us should try. He prayed and asked, “God, if you’re real please introduce me to the creator of the Prayer Box.”

Less than 24 hours later he receives a facebook message entitled “Stalker? Sorta.”

Odd, or God? :)

So James has designed a new prayer box, and the idea looks great. We’re now passing those plans to a carpenter who will construct the box. Then it will go to an artist who will decorate the box. The energy behind this project is amazing. Friends, we’re just a few days away from bringing the box to Runyon Canyon.

The process has already begun and I’m starting my next blog about our wonderful carpenter friends already to keep you looped. Pray it forward friends…the box is back.

And here is the mascot, our Prayer Box Poodle Rocko.

PrayerBox on Fox 11 News

Thank you producer David Fleming, for announcing the video link so all that missed the feature about my PrayerBox can watch. And thank you to everyone who’s been sending forward so much love after seeing the piece. For all the prayers that have been sent, I’ll be taking it to the top of Runyon personally so keep em coming! Also,

for those of you with the great suggestions about a website for the box, I’m actually in the process of creating something even better. My own website is being worked on now, and besides fun fashion news and blog, it will house a specific section where prayers taken up to the box will be posted along with an area for those who can’t make it to the box to post your prayers on my wall.  So stay in touch by replying here so that I have your email for updates and keep sending me specific prayers. Until then, see you at the top as we Pray it Forward together.

What is my PrayerBox- on Fox 11 News TONIGHT

Wow oh wow. Before I get into the exciting news for the box, let me explain what it is.

For those of you who have followed my blog, you also know about my beloved Prayer Box I’ve placed at the steepest tip top of Runyon Canyon, a beautiful hillside hike here in Hollywood, California. I first had the vision for this box 2 years ago after an overwhelming sense of gratitude for each day that I’ve taken to hike to the top to pray and “reset” for the day ahead. I wondered if every other person who takes the time to hike these two tall mountains felt the same way after reaching the top… knowing that no matter how hard it feels, how badly you don’t feel like doing it, if you believe and put your best foot forward, you WILL.

Finally, my wonderful hubz made the first box and although it had some mysterious encounters, it had been there for almost a year as it filled up each day with prayers stuffed inside. There were so many prayers that I had to assign friends (thank you Grace and Eliot!) to come every other day if I was away to fill it with more paper and bring some prayers down to friends who can’t make it to the top. Anyone is always invited to send me prayers that I’ll take to the top, with a promise to have one from the box sent back from me. My dear friend Jaeson Mah also created an incredible movie that features the box in his documentary 1040, that features the prayer box. I can’t tell you how exciting it is to receive regular prayers from all over the world, my first from Ghana last week, different languages like Korean, Spanish, and even Hebrew- I even received a prayer from a 6 year old girl named Janie from Ohio who just started writing cursive!

Anyway, it came time that the box needed to be upgraded. In came the answer to my own prayer, Stavros, my dear friend who became the carpenter to bring the PrayerBox 2.0 to life. With prayers of patience and working hours into the night, the box was made, brought to Clairefoster who kicked in the dopest art skillz over the box, and bam. Here’s a pic him and  PB 2.o, once it was brought to the top.

Instructions are simple: Leave a prayer, take a prayer.

It’s been only a month that the box has been up and already it’s filling up again. Prayers of hope, peace, individual prayers for loved ones who are hurt, broken, or just in need of love. It’s incredible. So just recently, a fan of the box and brilliant writer/reporter/world traveler/foodie David Fleming, contacted me to cover a story about the box on Fox 11 News. I accepted, more than anything to share my faith that prayer is hope in action, and to encourage everyone to Pray it Forward. The PrayerBox story will air TONIGHT 5/25 10PM on Fox 11 News, and TOMORROW 5/26 morning.

I just realized I look like I’m rapping in this picture.

Anyway enjoy the story tonight, please do make it out to the box if you’re here in LA, or email me at jmail@iheartjeanniemai.com to get your prayers to the top. (Include mailing address if you’d like a prayer sent back.)

As a community together, we each can keep each other lifted in faith and love. Heart you guys. So freakin much :)

I <3 Heartbeat.

So far- my trip to Vietnam has been surreal. The food, the people…I can’t even stand it. Yesterday I spent time meeting the family of amazing people at the Heartbeat Vietnam headquarters, and learned all the stories of children who had been qualified to receive heart surgeries. Besides meeting the outstanding Robin King Austin who brought her vision to life by founding Heartbeat Vietnam, I met the incredible staff of talented people who put all the efforts forth to save these children. The most memorable part of my visit was seeing this wall of beautiful children, all with a sensational smile and a signature scar of life down the center of their chest. Mimi described to me the stories behind each of these children from various provinces around Vietnam, and how-thanks to each donor- these pictures are able to be rotated often to celebrate each heart surgery completed! With that, Robin blessed me with the greatest invite ever..to go TODAY to actually visit a young survivor who just recently received her heart surgery! I can’t even tell you how jittery my fingers are in typing this blog to head out on my way now to the hospital to see Hoa. Stay tuned for pictures of Hoa and I.. and thank you so much for joining me here to make things like this happen my friends.
