I’m going to Vietnam, and here’s how you can join me.

That’s right friends. I’m dying of excitement to finally be taking the first vacation in three stretched years of non-stop working. And well, I even feel bad saying that because I lovemy jobs, so I don’t even feel like I’m overworked, but this is an entirely different trip where I’m going to be working in the way I most love.

So where am I going?? To…(drumroll please, with chopsticks)…

Saigon, Vietnam!! Not only am I so thrilled to be visiting one of my most favorite countries in the world, but I’m elated to meet the children and families of an organization I’m very passionate about- Heartbeat Vietnam, a program by Vina Capital Fund to hold provincial outreach clinics staffed by  volunteer doctors and surgeons from major hospitals in Vietnam. The first time I was ever made aware of the lack of hospital care in Vietnam was on my last family trip there a few years back. We were traveling away from the city life of Ho Chi Minh and headed more towards the rural countryside to visit distant family and friends. Once there, I recognized instantly the need for medical attention. I remember visiting the villages outside Hanoi and coming across numerous households with children that were sick, some with flus having lasted for weeks, some bedridden from unknown illnesses. When I’d ask why these children haven’t made their way to see a doctor, the answer was unanimous: with none to little finances and the only options for care being hours into town over rough terrain, the only hope was to pray for a miracle. This was so hard for me to fathom, and I realized I’ve never thought twice that I live 6 blocks away from one of the finest hospitals here in LA. This made me determined to bring not just this awareness back to the states, but something back to Vietnam for these hopefilled families.

I began spreading the word about this need.  After many cold calls, my great friend Kathy Uyen, a successful actress living in Vietnam responded about having met a young passionate woman who worked with a charity fund dealing directly with these areas. Long story short, the Director of Development, Mimi Vu and I connected, both with a vision to use our platforms to bring hope to those in need around us.

So I’m off to Vietnam this Tues, 2/23. During my trip, I’m going to be volunteering some time to spend at these clinics funded by donations thru Heartbeat Vietnam. Each outreach clinic provides free care to 200-300 children, including diagnostic testing, treatment, and placement on the cardiac surgery
waiting list if required, and the best part, within the communities of these villages in remote areas . Mimi explained to me that families will travel hours through the night in order to arrive to the clinics early to hold their place in line for medical attention.  I’m determined to bring encouragement and prayer to these families and volunteer doctors, meanwhile extend a way that you each can also be a part of this journey.

HERE’S HOW YOU CAN HELP:

Any donation, ANY amount is beyond appreciated!!  And I truly mean this- because ANY amount u donate, Vina Capital MATCHES DOLLAR FOR DOLLAR.  As I head there, I will be blogging updates with pictures and video for you to see where your support is going straight towards. This site also allows me to thank you personally, and to keep you updated. YOU are helping me make this happen. Thank you.

Donatebubble230x90transbgIt is a link where you can safely make your donation, allow me to personally thank you and keep in touch, and also meet and connect with other wonderful people like yourself who are bringing hope to these families.

And of course, thank you for reading and praying me along.

Until then, I had a wonderful hike lifting up so many of your wonderful submissions for prayers.

Thanks for “Praying it Forward” with me this morning. Remember if you’d like me to send a prayer back in return, here’s the info.
Thanks to Lillian who brought her prayers up today.

And um…let’s all pray for Vy here who…let’s just say we delivered her prayer for her ;P

How can I Pray it Forward with you?

Oh my gosh, I had the most amazing weekend I have to share with you guys.

If you live here in LA you know that it was raining like crazy for a hot second. Last week for like 5 days straight- . And everyday I was envisioning my beloved lil surviving prayer box up on that hill by itself getting soaked, possibly even blown off the hill. (I have a very dramatic imagination.) Well, I went up there right when the rain stopped for a second to check on the box, and yes it was safe! So I filled it up with fresh paper and new pens. That was 4 days ago.

Today, I hiked up to the top just to drop off some prayers (Kelly, prayin for your job situation! and my dear friend Rosa, need a miracle for her health.) Again, this is FOUR days later, and watch this video to see what I found!

THANK YOU to friends who make it to Runyon to Pray it Forward! I hope I see you there someday. It’s simple: all u have to do is leave a prayer, then take a prayer. And to those who can’t make it, do send your prayers to jmail@iheartjeanniemai.com and I’ll get it in.

(Also don’t forget to join me THIS SAT, 2/6, for my Live Chat after my show! Here’s how: http://bit.ly/bOp2SX)

The JEANNIE MAI way to have a Happy Birthday

By counting my blessings:

#31. I have friends who will actually go to the trouble each year to get me a wheat-free bday cake I can eat. God bless u babes!!

#30. My job is to make people feel fan-freakin-tastic about who they are. I get to do it whether I’m working or not.

#29. I really love the lil things I don’t love about my bod. It gets me creative about how to dress them all up, otherwise I’d just be wearing Victoria Secret wings all day.

#28. I love everyday so much I actually get sad when it’s bedtime.  Since I was freaking 4.

#27. 6 months ago I placed a GodBox on the top of Runyon Canyon. A few days later, somebody removed it and FACEBOOKED ME “People shouldn’t have the right to pray.” This year, 2010, on New Year’s Day, my GodBox SHOWED UP AGAIN out of nowhere at the top of Runyon Canyon. Ha. Faith never fails.

#26. Being a girl is so much fun!!! And I love how my gays remind me this.

#25. When I was younger, I remember being asked what secret powers I could wish to have. But to this day I’ve always had the ability to see anybody’s most beautiful potential. Anybody.

#24. I love how God gives you specific situations to remind me exactly where I need to grow . He’s a sneaky one.

#23. I wrote a story years ago about how my mom did one thing to change my perspective about my unique-ness for the rest of my life. I submitted it into a school paper, and it was denied because the editor thought it encouraged rebellion. Fast fwd 20 years later and Chicken Soup for the Soul not only approached me to share a story about Mom, but loved it and is printing it in this year’s edition for Moms. I’ll blog when book is out, and yay for Mom.

#22.I had the best upbringing in the entire world. The more I didn’t have, the more creative I got.

#21. I’ll never forget a summer job I had working at TGIFriday’s. I learned a) how to serve people. b) how to make blinking crap hot on suspenders.

#20. I love other people’s birthdays more than my own. I have no prob remembering why I was born, but I find other people do and I’m really good with that.

#19. I’m UB-sessed with fro yo. I swear I used to dream of getting behind that counter and pumping that ish myself. God bless LA…where Asians obviously feel there isn’t enough around.

#18. I LOVE bouncy butts. I certainly don’t have the best one, and I’m ok with that because I get my fix thru everyone else’s.

#17. Even tho we can talk anywhere- there’s a special place I head everyday just to get my mind rocked with all He’s got to say called Runyon Canyon. And He’s a great conversationalist. He rambles on my way up, then it’s my turn down :)

#16. I have no idea if I’ll ever be pregnant, but I love that I know it’ll be entertaining.

#15. I can teach anyone how to feel sexy.

#14. I’m surrounded in an industry of people who’s job is to make people feel good. It’s unexplainable to be around this vision everyday.

#13. I’m so blessed with my phone camera that catches what forever looks like.

#12. This past year I hosted at an event called Catalyst that took my faith to a whole new level of understanding. Like meeting Nick Vujicic, who reminded me how every single person was made perfect.

#11. Everybody’s busy. And everyone could be doing something for somebody else. But when people like Betty Pettit takes the time to remember every single person’s birthday and bakes a wheat free pie to ensure this new girl at Extra doesn’t get forgotten, I’m blessed.

#10. I love how smiles look better with age.

#9. I was raised with F.O.B mentality. Fresh off the boat are peeps who came here from another country and don’t really care about fitting in. Which explains what’s up with pj’s in public, horrific smelling Asian grocery stores, and bad driving. And why on this gorgeous summer day my family went on the best bike riding day in flip flops and children’s bicycles.

#8. I love that I thought this was cute.

#7. I have nieces and nephews who know exactly what it means to Jeannie-jazz a picture.

#6. I love those people who think of you out of nowhere- and act on it.

#5. Good Food.

#4. My mom is “Don’t” who will damn well “Do”.

#3. I feel like my birthday is everyday. Seriously.

#2. The man who put a ring on me shows me what “I Do” means every single day.

#1. From Facebook friends and fans I’ve never met who take the time to post me, to every talented person I’ve worked with to bring creative projects together, to friends who celebrate life every time we’re together, to family who puts up with me and helps me become better– THANK YOU ALL  for another beautiful birthday.

The bestest kickoff to my Holiday season–giving away good looks.

Me and Linda

A few months ago I found out about  a nursing home that cares for elderly people who no longer have the ability to care for themselves. Some are disabled, some single or double amputees, and after visiting I saw that all were so full of heart. After hearing about their “Cocktail Fridays”, (evenings with Myles serving yummy virgin drinks), seeing their schedule mapped out with movie nights, and meeting a few of the patients who would come out to visit on the set of my show, How Do I Look,  I quickly learned that the patients and I shared one major thing in common- we look forward to having any reason to celebrate the life the we have.

So this past Saturday a few friends and I spent the most the most spectacular day with the patients of Highland Park. There isn’t any person I’ve ever met who doesn’t love the to feel radiant or have personal attention, so how perfect to combine it by creating a Spa-licious day!  I’m so blessed to be surrounded by TALENTED PEOPLE. And by that I not only mean people with specific areas of expertise, but I’m talking about people who can jump into any area of need to give. So there we were, like little elves offering hair cuts, make up, nails services, massages, rounds of some fierce Bingo, and decked the halls (literally) with some homemade decorations!

It was amazing talking with the residents, hearing their stories, and later dancing the night away with their new present of a karaoke machine and a framed Christmas photo opp :) Everyone looked unbelievable, of course. I almost felt selfish by the end of our night because I had been so blessed by the memorable moments of smiles and words of appreciation that I will never forget. I want to begin by thanking every single person who jumped in to offer every effort you put forth. Thank you husbands and boyfriends who came to the girliest day to holiday it up with us. Thank you my Bory, who allows me to bring my imagination to life. And the biggest most special thanks to Jamie Krell and the family of Tractenberg PR for the unbelievably generous donation of  goods for the patients to pamper themselves from here on. (We were even able to put the fabulous extensions on a cancer survivor Wendy pictured below!)  And huge thank you Christina, for capturing these picture perfect moments for us. You’ve got to check out all the pics captured on her link here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/seechou/sets/72157622950562450/ , and for more of Christina’s work, go to Christina Chou/seechou photography.

Special thanks to Shinobi Studios for placing the cherry on top finish to our night by giving these guys personalized pictures they can keep forever. Check out how ADORABLE they turned out here!

And of course check my facebook for more. Luv u Highland Park :)

Norma gives out hugs. Carly with her fabulous cuts

Wendy with her new extensions.

Love, Jeannie.

Dear God,

Why is Thanksgiving only one day? Asmom much as I am thankful every single day for my bombtastic life, can we please consider having more holidays where we bring people, food, and thanks together?? Hallmark would have a field day, and we need pumpkin things in March. Please consider this.

Although I love everything you’ve given me, there are just a few faves I just have to give you props on. Like my mom. You couldn’t have hooked me up with a more perfect woman to raise me. I owe my career to her because she gave me the freaking personality I have to even be anything on tv, and who else would teach me to put fake lashes when I was 6? And these families I have on both coasts. I mean, come on. Who else would ever have thought to give me the most warm, affectionate loving people who celebrate everything no matter how many times it takes for each kid in the family to enjoy on the east coast, and the most rowdy, FoB (fresh off the boat) fantastic fun family on the west coast to rock out with in San Jose?? I can’t even stand it. Yummy kid Oh, and then there’s my j-o-b. Are you serious with giving me the best career a girl could ever dream for where I play dress up to get onscreen and make some stylish smiles?? My path to empowering people is barely just beginning, and I’m so appreciative of the lil signs you give me to push me along. Heart my job.And omg (pardon the pun) you’re pretty spectacular with these friends you’ve filled in my life. I have such a creative combo of caring people, and can write a book about what makes a good friend. Late nite nom nom.(They get your inappropriate jokes, help you get the ugly cry out, bring you food from fave places when they think of you, yes, TELL YOU when you’re fat, oh and my fave, actually volunteer to help you pack & move.) Then there’s so many fantastic things in my every day too that I hafta squeel over, like mint fro yo when I can find it, gorgeous Runyon canyon romps to the top, the way Nicole Millen fits, the really burnt roasted brussel sprouts, any great sale, Ca Kho (Vietnamese claypot fish), the McQueens in Lady Gaga’s video,Haute. toothless kids, Asset spanx, socks from Target, naps, my legs that never gain weight, Modern Family, a hug back, my job as a server way back when. And Lasik.

So if I had to find something to ask for it’d be making Thanksgiving longer, that’s all. And maybe slipping America a chill pill over things like Adam Lambert. Otherwise You’re on it like a bonnet!
Heart ya God- enjoy your leftover turkey.

Progging up RunyonLove,
Jeannie

Changing lives on screen… and off.

How Do I LOVE?

Every amazing person in this picture above came together thru a show intended to change the lives of others.

Here we are, on a Sunday afternoon, helping to save the lives of so many more.

Today, the family, friends, and team of How Do I Look and Style Network joined together to take the steps (literally) to walk in the 2009 Heroes of Hope Race for Research, brain tumor awareness walk. I was so glad I was wearing my sunglasses because I kept tearing up in disbelief that the people who made it out or supported were my co-workers. I had gotten sick that morning so I  arrived a few minutes after the race officially started, so I parked a bit ahead and began walking towards the racers to meet them head on. I was so worried I wouldn’t be able to find our few individuals from our show (not sure how many really ended up coming.) As I walked thru scattered groups of unrecognizable people, I suddenly began seeing clusters of these gorgeous faces in these bright yellow shirts. Yup, as I looked closer, sure of enough the shirts read “How Do I Look” and I squealed over how many made it out! I still can’t believe it.. all people I know through work- behind the scenes of a television show. I don’t take it for granted that I can work long hours of a week with the same people only to look forward seeing them all again on my day off.  So there we were-joining about 500 runners and walkers to raise a total amount of $45,ooo! It was such a fantastic feeling to know that every little bit of effort together brings us towards a beautiful goal.

Our Timmy takes it to the finish line!

I’m so proud to be a part of Style network, who placed us in the top 3 of major donators! Thank you Style Network! Special thanks to the delicious and healthy snacks of Pirate’s Booty and organic ingredients of Famous Cupcakes for teaching people how to live and love food healthy.  And thank you to each and every individual pictured here below that took every second to make it all happen.

My new found fan :) (and a great hugger!)The team that made it happen, and our guest of honor Billy

Mai fave kind of Love.

What love looks like.

I met this kid at the Today show green room in NY. He was literally just sitting there, no idea whose he was, but he had this face. Right? So I go, “ohhhmygooshh..You are the most precious thing I’ve ever seen! Can I give you a hug?”

He looked up at me with from beneath these illegal eyelashes and ran at me with the most open arms – embracing me so hard I lost my breath. This is the picture before I fell over.

I pray everyone has love like this somewhere in their life. To give and to get. No walls, no holding back, no intro needed, and totally enuff to knock u off ur feet.

How to give the best kind of love? Step 1- Give.

Happy Saturday friends.
