Guess Who’s Goin to the Kentucky Derby?

And the style stakes are up!

Because your very own Jeannie Mai is going to be in Luh-ville, Kentucky for this year’s Kentucky Derby! That means you better be following mai fan page on Facebook , Twitter  and Instagram. Not only will I be reporting the fashion on NBC, I will also be posting everything worth seeing online for YOU.

This also means of course, that I’ve got to get a hat! I can’t even tell you B.U.G.’s how excited I am to pick out just the right one for each of my outfits. I plan on wearing two hats specifically that you’ll be seeing, and one is currently being brought to life as we speak. When I envisioned a piece that would be unique and celebratory of the Derby, I knew I had to call upon my exquisitely talented designer friend, Emiliano Moreno. Emiliano has made many exclusive garments for me on my show “How Do I Look  to special events, like my speaking engagement for the Maria Shriver Women’s conference.

I also just got special news. Emiliano has shared with me a glimpse of the piece he’ll be creating for me. Here’s a preview of it’s before pic:

I want to come up with a name for Emiliano’s creation when it’s done. (I love naming special pieces of mai wardrobe.) From the look and color of it so far, can you help me?

I sell Self Confidence…

… says the woman we thought made her million from selling clothes. Veteran American designer Diane von Furstenberg spent a Sunday evening with Nona Walia during her recent visit to India.

The view from Diane von Furstenberg’s private royal wing at a five-star in the capital overlooks the heart of Lutyens Delhi. It’s the setting sun’s failing light filtering through the spring flowers that she sees when she stands by a large window, twirling a pair of tortoise shell spectacles distractedly in her hand.

The 64-year-old walks around the suite barefoot; possibly one of many traditions from India she has grown a fascination for. It’s the Belgium-born American designer’s second visit to the country, and she’s already a fan – of the sari, the colours, and chaos. “I spent a lifetime dedicated to making women look good. I understand women and create magic for them,” she says, looking to summarise a career spanning 40 years. It’s a career that started with a $30,000 investment as soon as she was married to Prince Egon von Furstenberg of Germany, because she “wanted to be someone of my own.”

The 27-year-old Fashion Police blazed down the red carpet in a bold blue Zac Posen dress as she prepared to perform as E! News’ correspondent.

Her E! co-host Giuliana Rancic managed two costume changes between duties – she arrived in a floor-length grey and black Monique Collignon gown and later changed into a nude Basil Soda getup.

Of course there was some stars who kept things simple in basic black but Rooney Mara showed exactly why the colour is certainly not boring in a cut out creation by Nina Ricci and said she was ‘nervous’ about the ceremony.

Claire Danes teamed a black and white gown J Mendall also with a cut out detail on the back with bright red lips.

The nominated actress admitted: ‘I’m nervous but I’m also excited I’ve got my mom with me.’

While most stars were looking their best there were some who failed to avoid a fashion disaster.

Sarah Michelle Gellar’s blue and white abstract gown by Monique lee might have been chosen by her daughter but it was not the most elegant look of the night.

Golden Globes presenter Ricky Gervais didn’t spend time loitering around on the red carpet, perhaps avoiding stars who he was about to insult.

MORE Fashion Tips to Bring in the New Year.

Just wanted to share an interview from my other “home” town, Pennsylvania. Thanks Julia for such a lovely write up!

From http://blog.pennlive.com

By JULIA HATMAKER, The Patriot-News

Fashion expert Jeannie Mai is a woman on a mission.

“I want to encourage women to stand out and be different,” she said.

Her modus operandi? Changing the way women feel, one outfit at a time.

The makeup artist, stylist and host of Style Network’s “How Do I Look?” is a West Coast gal with family in central Pennsylvania, courtesy of her husband, Freddy Harteis, who grew up in Linglestown and is a Central Dauphin High School graduate.

Mai spent Thanksgiving in Harrisburg with Harteis’ family, which gave her a chance to size up the area’s fashionistas.

The results of her research are in – just in time for New Year’s Eve. Here are her four tips for the perfect party outfit and some ways to make sure you’re sending the right signals when you ring in 2012.

Mix-and-match patterns

The runways have been preaching the beauty of mixing and matching patterns. Make that trend festive by glitzing it up. “You can clish, clash, mish, mash the glitter and the glitz,” Mai said, so pair a shimmery shirt with a sequined skirt and shimmery tights and prepare to dazzle.

Glam up the everyday

Going to a casual New Year’s Eve event? Stay festive by adding flair to your day outfit with jewelry.

Mai recommends rhinestones with sweatshirts and gold bangles with turtlenecks. “You just glitzed up in a street way that’s really cool,” she said.

Ditch the skirt

Dressing up doesn’t have to mean dresses and skirts. “Personally, I’m bored of always wearing skirts and dresses,” Mai said. She recommends donning trousers, a glitzy top and a boyfriend blazer for a chic, hip look.

Focus on lips

One thing Mai noticed during her time in Harrisburg is a love of eye makeup.

“I noticed people here don’t like to wear bold lip colors,” she said. “But I think this is the time when people get to give their eye makeup a break and definitely focus on those lips.” She recommends using a matte color and then a bit of petroleum jelly for a little gloss. Also, only put the gloss on the center of the lips.

“What I also love to do is what I call glitz – putting glitter on the lipstick,” Mai said. So take that bold color and glam it up to get the perfect, ruby-jeweled lips look.

Something tells us Taylor Swift would approve.

Be a “wearapist”

Mai calls herself a “wearapist,” a person who believes that clothing affects people’s moods.

“I believe colors and textures can really enhance your mood,” she said.

Her outfits are based on two questions: “What do I want to say?” and “What do I want to feel?” So start the new year off by sending the right message at a New Year’s Eve party. Find the statement that fits you best.

I want to be…

Welcoming: Friendliness is all in the texture. “Anything that’s furry and soft will really invite a welcoming atmosphere,” Mai said. “Soft textures create a welcoming ambience about you.”

A blank slate: If you want to start the new year off fresh, wear white. “White says ‘I am a whole new person,’ “Mai said. And don’t feel like you have to be head to toe in the shade. Just a white blazer or top can send that “I’ve hit the refresh button” vibe and make you feel like you’re starting over.

Mysterious: Purple is the shade for those wanting to be enigmatic. “It’s a very romantic, mysterious color that always leaves people guessing,” Mai said. “It’s very royal, very rich.” Bold: Think royal blue if you want to be bold. “It’s a beautiful color to say I’m here, I’m fun, I’m grounded, I’m confident,” Mai said. Shrug off a childish past by embracing this more mature, serious shade in your outfit.

Funky: Nothing says life of the party quite like orange. “If you want to be lively, jubilant and joyful, orange is an amazing color to wear,” Mai said. In her closet is an orange top, which she wears with black pants or red skirts.

Can’t get enough of Mai’s fashion tips? Be sure to tune in 10 p.m. every Monday to see the fashionista in action on Style Network’s “How Do I Look?”
