Veggie Grill Girl

That’s me. A VGG. Not to be confused with Va-JJ.I don’t even know how long it’s been that I deemed myself a VGG, but I can safely say it was before the third Yelper shared their life changing experience there. I still remember people floating outside the Crescent Heights location here in West Hollywood, staring at it with judgement over the over-healthy name, making more room for me as I whizzed pass them to order. But not anymore. Today Veggie Grill is booming in biz, busier than ever, and my favorite part, even nicer and full of customer service smiles than ever before.  Which is why they were my top choice to feed a hardworking crew in celebration of this past season’s of  The Hollywood Hunter . First off, I didn’t even know that VG offered catering, and not just that. Veggie Grill actually lets you veg out when it comes to the planning and preparation of your feeding needs. Complete with utensils, tongs, plates, and even great, appealing serving trays, all you seriously need to do is invite the hungry guests! Here are some of the faves we had: All Hale Kale salad:

This is it people. This is all you need to have to put your body into full fledge happy mode. I can’t get over how they massage the kale into this sweet, savory dressing blend with pops of quinoa, then add the perfect amount of chopped marinated tomatoes, zesty herbs, hearty agave nectar caramelized walnuts, and beautiful, sweet carrot strings atop. I can actually say hands down, this is the best salad in Los Angeles. I have it once a week, and I couldn’t believe that a whopping 25 out 30 guests said they have never had kale or thought it sounded appetizing. Look how much was left!

Santa Fe Chicken Sandwich:

These were good, because of the moist, flavorful soy chicken. Vegetarian or not, all liked. The bun is really soft and wholesome tasting, not at all in a healthy diet way, and the mayo/ relish sauce gives the sandwich just enough of the New Mexican kick. Carrot Cake:

How adorbs was it of VG to cut up these personal portion sized carrot cakes. Every single person had two, so actually ran out of dessert for late guests. Not only is the cake part super soft and light, but the spice factor and chopped carrots actually come together very rich, without being filling. The best part is the frosting. Again, whipped and light, and how I LOVE that the frosting doesn’t harden like the others! K, y’all know how I’m always promoting ways to be green? Well would’t you know so does VG with their policy to reward returned serving trays with one of their homebaked delicious cookies. Which only means we had to sit down for more: Chicken Tortilla soup

Only served on a specific day of the week, this soup is chunky, sweet, and creamy in all the right places. The consistency is what makes it perfect, just be careful as the soup can be filling all on it’s own. SPF Rather than being protective, these SPF’s are actually dangerous. BUT only Veggie Grill can make em so healthy that even if you did over indulge, it’s not terrible for you. Fried in _____ and made from wholesome organic sweet potatoes, VG’s SPF’s aren’t necessarily meant for sharing. Here’s a close up to see how each is dusted and salted with the perfect powdery seasoning that isn’t quite salty, but completely perfect in flavor. Buffalo Chicken Strips

These are something new to the menu, and I’ve found after ordering them a couple times that they’re better if you note to make em crispy. My personal favorite is the endless amount of sauce options you can have for whichever mood you’re in.

You know what also inspired me after eating at VG? The gorgeous color blocking of orange and green. The green of kale against a fierce orange is really hot. Have you tried colors like this together? Give it a whirl first in eyeshadows. It’s kinda sick.

Or take a tip from Sonia Rykiel’s past runway collection here:

So there you have it. When’s the last time you ate healthy with a homecooked feel? Do yourself a favor- eat there, tweet em, and say the VGG sent ya.

Mary Had a Little Lamb…Neck

Or at least she wish she did.

Friends. I have discovered something that I am sinfully addicted to- the lamb neck. It’s like my two favorite meats, the oxtail and the rib, decided to make love, have a child, and carry it for fifteen months instead of nine. And what do you have? A ridiculously tender, succulent, savory in it’s own juices piece of biblical animal that I’m sure was sacrificed for just that scrumptious lil body part. And the best part? You Angelenos can get it right here in LA on every Monday and Friday of the week.

I’m talking about Shamshiri Grill, nestled above Santa Monica Blvd and Westwood. Everything there is awesome, but you don’t mess around with the other stuff on these two days of the week. This past Monday I brought my GTG- girlz that grub. The only kind I kick it with.

Here’s the breakdown of our dinner:

Lamb Neck in Okra Stew: The lamb neck was sitting beneath this heaping, hot medley of vegetables, tomatoes, slight curry/gravy concoction. My favorite were the button mushrooms muddled in the sauce, they were so rich with flavor. This dish was devoured by the spoonful.

Lamb Neck with Saffron Herb Rice: As you can see, we wanted the rice to be far far away from our precious lamb. I like this dish the best because there was more for the meaters. I wish this pic had smell-o-vision, then you’d be able to actually pick up the amount of hours the lil guy was cooked. It was just heavenly, and when you put your fork to the bone, pieces of meat would just fall into the juices settled along the bottom of the dish where it just made you salivate getting it on to the fork.

Next up, Chicken Barg and Breast: Good ol staples. The barg is very moist and lightly flavored so you really taste the meld and massage of the meats. And I love that it’s not too salty, sometimes Mediterranean food can be over salted to me. Have to be honest I didn’t try the chicken breast. Good dish, but lil lamby steals the spotlight.

And last but not least the Saffron Rice: I gotta say, Persian grains of rice almost fumble around one another like it’s the “white stuff”, (Uncle Ben’s). I’m not knockin it, just sayin you could get kicked out bringing a box of that home to the Mai household. Anyway, it was delicious. Saffron infused, slightly buttery, completely absorbs and brings out the flavor of everything on our dish.

(Don’t you kind of love how I got the ray of Jesus over the rice? He follows me like that.)

And the wrap up shot:

Good right? Lemme tell you after all the girls devoured the dishes, there was still tons to take home.

Oh I almost forgot. My GTG’s! Here’s Kathy and Chammerz…

And me and Grace. My Peachies, who decides to go with an elaborate Twitter alias.

I would have to say the complimenting piece of fashion to our meal was Chammy’s romper. It was adorbs, very en trend with polka dots for fall, and as you can see served as a backdrop to the lamb neck nicely. Where’d you get it Chammy? Do tweet.

There you have it. Mondays and Fridays, you know where I’ll be.  Would yall try it?

*Just dawned on me that they’re all Asian. I swear I hang out with other races.

Food in BRAZIL: The Mortadella

The moment I knew I was traveling to Sao Paolo, Brazil to be the fashion correspondent for the Miss Universe pageant, I called up the one reliable source to love all foods Latin: Street Gourmet LA. Not only does Bill, the man behind SGLA, know EVERYTHING there is to the foods within all of the Latin regions, but he knew Brazil very well from his recent travels there to dine. My luck to reach Bill days before my trip, which then turned into the most delicious, mouthwatering download of places to eat and foods to eat I’ve ever had in 30 minutes of my life. It’s like the guy had a map of his trip written right on his hand as he listed the exact places to be, times of day to make it, and dishes to make sure I didn’t miss. Bill is the Grub God.

I dumped off my bags and headed straight to the one place Bill mentioned first in our discussion: The Mercado Municipal. Nestled in a hectic downtown district of toys, housewares, clothing, and gifts, The Mercado looked like a huge food mart of meats, nuts, candies, desserts, everything edible..with a huge bustling food court on the second level. Up I went, through the crowds of people, to find the mighty Mortadella sandwich Bill had described. It wasn’t hard to find. In fact, it was hard to choose which one to eat because nearly all the food stalls offered the Mortadella in different combinations of meats. The most basic description of a Mortadella is that it’s a type of bologna, an emulsified meat sausage. But after trying it, I can guarantee you it is nowhere near the description of bologna like we know here in the states. This particular sausage has flavorful pockets of fat, fresh whole and half peppercorns, and PISTACHIOS weaved through it. Each bite is different, fulfilling, and ultra savory delicious. I wanted to try the actual Mortadella by itself so I requested just the meats and the generous owner shared with me his best cuts.

** Side note- I’m the type to LOVE to try variety, so I usually can’t stick to one meal. I think it’s the Asian in me of eating family style, dim sum breakfasts, side dishes of all kinds…whatever the reason it’s the best way to eat in mai opinion. :)

Another reason why I saved my appetite from an entire Mortadella sandwich was because I eyeballed something else that peaked my curiosity even more- a sardine sandwich. I have no idea what it’s traditionally called, so if anyone has ideas, please lend! Anyway here it is:

This kind of hit a nostalgic feeling for me. I remembered my days growing up a lil ghetto where I was in bliss choosing after school snacks to be things like Top Ramen packs eaten dry with the sauce packets sprinkled inside, (anyone ever do that??), or toast with butter and sugar. Well another fave was cracking open a can of sardines and spreading it, with it’s tomato juice, along a toasted slice of bed with mayo and Shriacha. Mmm. This was like that, but a lot saltier*.

It was my first day there in Sao Paolo, so I didn’t feel slices of Mortadello and a sardine sammich cut it. So I eyeballed something else and beelined for it.

Pork rinds. Ahhh, my teenage days of running around the streets of King Road and Tully in San Jose, CA came flying back when I bit into these pork rinds. Super crispy and fatty. I felt my heart stop for a moment- to thank me.**

I wasn’t done there with my dim sum style of dining. Oh no. After thanking the lovely owner for serving me, I took off in search for sweets. Downstairs I went into the actual Mercado, and found this:

I have no idea how to pronounce this. Co-codah? Anyway, shreds of pure (gorgeous, might I add) coconut laced together by syrup into this crunchy confection of Brazilian pride.

And this- a scrumptious looking petit four covered in pistachio nuts and waiting for me to kiss.

Now here’s where my first love affair with Brazil began. Not at the Mortadella, not at the desserts, but at the PAOLISTAS (the locals, as they call themselves).

Seriously, the NICEST, SWEETEST people I have ever met as a foreigner to a country. I noticed that every time I looked remotely lost or confused, a passing by Paolista would jump in to help. Which is exactly what Lucy, this gorgeous Rio native here, did when I was stuck staring at the desserts.  (Don’t you love her smile!??)

Within moments we were gushing about the Brazilian culture, how excited I was to be there, and her dreams of going to Serbia to work with children. I was inspired and so blessed to have met Lucy and pray her on!

After that we did what all women need to do once in the company of desserts. Share! We tried all our different picks, which were all yummerz.

After that Lucy and her sister Gena WALKED us to my next destination I stubbornly refused to cab to, Liberdade. Lucy and Gena gave us the best warmest welcome into Brazil that I will never forget. She also told me the reason why she wanted to make sure to host me to my next destination is because somebody had done that for her when she was lost on her own travels the year before in a different country. I can’t wait for my turn to pay it forward, Lucy!

And there you have it- my first of many eating experiences in Brazil. Not so bad, right? And just you wait, it gets SO MUCH BETTER if you can imagine.

Oh, and I almost forgot! The slice of fashion that accompanied me to these foods were my awesome Topshop highwaisted shorts in a different color like these here.

I pretty much pack these babies on EVERY one of my trips because they can be worn casual with flats, dressed up with heels, shirts tucked in or out, super easy for restroom stops, AND make you look fab on the fly. There you have it! Stay tuned for my next Brazil blog and lemeno what you think about Brazil so far!

*Note- almost everything I tasted in Brazil had a pound of salt on it. More like, lbs.

Back from Brazil, with mai Miss Universe Recap!

Did anybody notice bruises on my arm the night of the pageant? Cuz lemme tell ya, I must have pinched myself about a dozen times to make sure my flying out to Sao Paolo, Brazil as the fashion correspondent for Miss Universe was NOT a dream. Literally, I was packing and dancing at the same time, while reaching out to all my hardcore foodies like StreetFood Gourmet LA to give me the grub lowdown in Sao Paolo. (Look out for my awesome food porn blogs btw.) But my main moment of surreality was being a part of an event I grew up watching ever since I was a little girl- not because of the pretty girls. But to question what our world thought beauty was- and whether or not this pageant would capture that.

Here’s the thing, of course I was excited about the fashion perspective I’d have over the entire event. How could one not, with more glitter and makeup on any ONE contestant than an entire episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race?  There were so many crazy observations I had as I played the fly on the wall every day of rehearsals leading up to the event. Like the fact that every contestant was dressed to the NINES at any given time walking around their hotel to heading to rehearsals, sash, full makeup and all.  Or the fact that, damn…these girls could EAT. Here are a few other things I thought were so interesting:

- A tradition the girls do for one another is to bring a symbolic small gift for ALL one another, to represent their country and wish luck. Miss Switzerland brought boxes of chocolate for everyone, including me!

- Natalie Morales came in to my dressing room to specifically tell me Miss Vietnam was the sweetest girl ever, perfect representation of Vietnam. Love that!

- Miss Panama could completely take Angelina Jolie down with them lips–that yes, WERE natural.

- I noticed many girls taking up to 8 pills before sitting down to eat. Could have been for allergies and such…#just saying.

- These girls bust their BUTTS not only doing press leading up to the pageant, but in the rehearsals themselves. I’m talkin 6 inch heels doing booty shaking dances and poses just to make sure there’s not a glitch for the live event.

- Miss China told me she would totally date men shorter than her 6 foot stature.

- Miss Venezuela said she would not. (Ha! As Vivica A. Fox would say- keepitreal.com babe.)

All in all the girls were super sweet. There were some that were harder to get to know then others, but at the end of the day all were determined to be the winner.  Over the course of just a few days, I could see the different ways each defined what it takes to be Miss Universe.  It’s obvious who relied on looks, and who focused on their achievements and brains. And yet I remember seeing Miss Angola on one of the first days I had arrived. She was in the lunch line, with about 15 girls in front of her. The girls were starving and kind of racing to fill their plate in front of one another. One, who cut in front of her, dropped her napkin and Miss Angola stepped out of line to pick it up. She placed it off to the side, retrieved a new one, and handed it back to the young woman who was now further ahead, and politely waited till their was another break in the line to step back in. This drew me to her to sit down with her later and learn about her childhood, very humble beginnings, and really strong family ethics. She was very humble and shy, actually hesitant to talk too much about herself and asked me alot of questions. I remembered this about her when we saw the final 10 emerge on stage in the evening gown competition. While every other contestant strutted, sashayed, even whirled their dresses down the stairs to their spotlight pose, Miss Angola was the most simple and understated in her calm, slow gait. Like Princess Diana, the new Princess Kate, or Audrey Hepburn, Miss Angola was a Miss Universe of her very own. I’m really, very happy she won. She symbolizes that beauty isn’t an image, but a humble grace you carry within.

Also, so many questions about my signature glips (glittery lips!) inspired by my makeup artist Uzmee Krakovszki. As promised, here’s how you get mai GLIPS!

Here are more pics from the gorgeous event. It was such an amazing experience,  I was so honored to be a part of it. Special thanks to Barry Adelman and Paula Shugart and the Miss Universe Pageant for having me, Chuck LaBella and everyone at WME for making this happen, Andy Cohen, Natalie Morales and Nick for making my co-commentator Shandi Finnessey and I look good, Bory Tan for support in more than style, to Wolfy and Patrick for keeping outta trouble :) , the team at How Do I Look? for rooting me on back home, and THE STYLE NETWORK for the MOST THOUGHTFUL R &R basket I’ve ever received to help me recoop after a nightmarish flight home straight to set!!

I want to hear from you! Do you have any questions about the event? There’s so much to tell so ask away!

Miss India sends her love to my EP.

Andy is just freakin Adorable.

Me and co-commentator Shandi!

I’m thinking, suck it in suck it in!

And my favorite picture as I cap this blog. Thank you Style. As u can see, I dove straight for what is now, the best PB I have ever tried.

Swap Til You Drop

Last week I had the absolute pleasure to hang out with the faboosh Alison Sweeney, host of The Biggest Loser and author of The Mommy Diet. Along with nutritionist Christina Meyer-Jax we launched the “Yoplait Light Swap,” a great new way for dieters to lose unwanted weight by swapping out unhealthy food options with a Yoplait Light. If you’ve been having trouble shedding those points, check this great plan out.

I was there as the fashion expert giving some great ways to swap out items from your wardrobe to feel great. I always remind women that small changes, everything from clothing, to your hairstyle or accessories can really amp up your everyday look, without spending a fortune.

If you’ve been in need of pump in how fab you feel, perhaps it’s time you start to swap! And make sure to watch this fun video of Alison and me! I <3 this girl so much!

“The Come Fries” at Eveleigh in Los Angeles, CA

It wasn’t until after I was married that I began to eat fried foods regularly. My family taught me to be careful what you put in your body, and I tried to keep mine pure.  But the hubz opened my eyes that if you can be adult about it, and practice safe habits, you can eat fried foods and still respect your body.

Well, one of my all-time guilty pleasures has become enjoying the Come Fries at Eveleigh on the Sunset Strip. (I call em that because that’s how I hear them beckon to me. But you knew that.) I’m a FRENCH FRY connoisseur, as you can see here in my recent interview about food obsessions. Let’s be honest, it’s the topping on these fries that earned it’s name because they do just that- make you wanna come, and try em! The Come Fries are an amazing climax to a week of hard work and eating right. I am UBsessed with them, and whenever I’m going out to meet with some of my girlfriends I often pick Eveleigh as our spot to go so the gals and me can slurp down this great sauce. It’s the perfect ending to a great night.

Ladies, next time you are in the LA-area, stop by Eveleigh to have these fries. They’ll make you question why you ever needed a man and you’ll definitely be making your “O” face. And the best part, the Come Fries are not as salty as you’d expect.

Special Blogger Breakfast in NYC

Yay! I can finally get this blog up! After such a long week of travels to one of my favest cities.. New York, I’m finally settled here in LA to catch up on all the moments. On April 7th I had the honor of hosting a wonderful gathering. Picture it- some of the east coast’s most passionate, talented writers all having an intimate breakfast with me. We shared dreams, purposes behind each blog- there was nothing left uncovered in Mai life and their vision. LOVED IT. Thank you to each blogger that made it out. Here’s a GREAT recap below (thank you Beautyandthefeast! )  and do follow these passionate writers through my Twitter and  Facebook fanpage to look out for Mai exclusive personal tips and giveaways with them!

Me with the fabulous Jeannie Mai!

Jeannie Mai is a woman after my own heart. The half-Vietnamese half-Chinese beauty started in the biz as a makeup artist for Alicia Keys and Christina Aguilera where it wasn’t long people started to take notice of her spunk and style. The dazzling fashionista now hosts the Style Network’s How Do I Look?. And PS, she’s the ultimate foodie!

Jeannie Mai

I had the pleasure to meet her for breakfast along with many other wonderful bloggers yesterday in Times Square at the Renaissance Hotel’s fab R Lounge. Can I just say, Jeannie seriously lights up a room. From the moment she walked in, her presence, friendliness, and positive energy was the most infectious (and refreshing) thing ever. While all eyes were on her as she waltzed in wearing a white cotton shirt from The Limited (one of her faves), sparkly black harem PRPS pants, Guess by Marciano shoes, and jewelry from Lia Sophia and Forever21, her focus was on everyone else. No, seriously.

The Renassaince Hotel R Lounge
She gave equal attention to everyone in attendance, generously complimenting everyone on their outfits and accessories, then started answering questions. Of course, being a fellow makeup and food aficionado, I had to grab her for a few questions myself (and yes, I asked about her trademark blue hair!):

See our post on Macondo, Jeannie’s favorite restaurant

Jeannie’s faboosh nails

Here’s another video of her telling her inspiring story…

More interesting facts I learned about Jeannie:

Food inspires her like woah. While people get their fashion inspiration from art, music, people, Mai swears her inspiration comes from food. She meets with chefs frequently and takes creative cues from the presentation on the dishes, whether it’s colors, sauces, or the way it’s laid out. She even told us a story of how she gave a tiramisu cake, with chocolate and white lacey designs, and played on the same idea in a lacey pencil skirt and chocolate brown outfit. Everyone loved the cake but they really loved her fashion sense!

The adorable Jeannie Mai

Three questions she asks people on the show to help her make them over without having them lose their style: (1) What part of your body do you love? (2) What’s a childhood story that you look back fondly at? (3) Name a celebrity, icon, friend, or person in your life whom you admire? All of these give her clues to the psyche of the person and a sense of their taste.

Two indie brands she’s really feeling right nowUnited Nude shoes and Victoria Roe.

Three words she would use to describe herself and her brand: Empower, bright, and thankful.

Ten things about this “foodiva” you HAVE to know: (1) she would rather wear last season’s Louboutins than be caught dead in a chain food store; (2) believes Sriracha can be more healing that holy water; (3) will remove friends from Facebook if they order their steak well done; (4) dreams of one day touring in a food truck…with hydraulics; (5) has converted eight vegans into loving sauteed foie gras; (6) hugs every chef she meets; (7) is addicted to internet food porn; (8) prays before every single meal; (9) has a crush on Alton Brown; (10) believes good food can silence rowdy children, mend any broken heart, and end all wars. AMEN.

Can you understand now why I love this woman so much?? Jeannie, thank you SO much for your time and advice. Loved speaking with you!

You can watch Jeannie Mai every Saturdays on “How Do I Look?” at 8PM AND 11PM EST on the Style Network. She also shares her tips and trick on her official blog, iheartjeanniemai.com.

Sucka for Sweets

You know, I’d never think to describe myself as someone addicted to sweets. I don’t have a major sweet tooth, and I don’t always have to have it. But I think the only reason why I’m writing this ode to sweets now is because for the past 2 weeks I’ve been detoxing from sugar and alcohol to cleanse my liver, and I’m avoiding delicious faves like…..peanut butter yogurt paired with rasberry tart at Twirl, heaven on earth. Good God guys, it couldn’t be more perfect. Twirl’s peanut butter is super thick, rich, and explodes with fresh peanut flavor. The rasberry tart pairing is perfectly fragrant, with even seeds in the fro yo itself, which lends me the perfect placebo to make me think it’s healthy.

And I’m also guilty of envisioning a nibble of the ingenious invention, FINALLY, of the new Peanut Butter Snickers. (I’m so two thousand late compared to you, Megan Seling). But then I realize how UN-natural the candy itself is and can fend myself away in hopes that the uber yum Justin’s Peanut Butter Cups are around a store shelf somewhere to save me. (They’re SO GOOD!   Retire Newmans! Your cups taste as old as your pic on the package.)  How did this detox start? Well, my nutritionist Heewon, seems to think I went off the deep end with my “one” glass of wine a day and constant obsession to find the world’s best sweet potato fry, which then leads me to needing every peanut butter thing I’d ever lay eyes on in menus or friend’s fridges. So after months of that, I’m at a detox of easy forbidden foods, but for me mainly no sweets and no alcohol for 3 weeks. Until then I see no problem using this time to search the internet for peanut butter liquor. #problem

At the same time I’m not gonna lie that I feel much better in already 2 weeks. A routine detox is a healthy tune up for our bods! I’ve noticed a huge boost in my energy, my nights of rest are consistent, and I forget how amazing the human body is when we fuel em up right. And don’t get me wrong, being a healthy person doesn’t mean you can’t indulge in delicious desserts. It just means that I’m selective about the natural path the sugar found it’s way to my plate. Or two.

Thanks wholesome, raw, and natural Sunpower Cafe in LA. Please don’t think I’m stalking you when I’m there 12 more times to finish out my last week of death. I mean detox.

**Excuse grammatical errors. That’s what happens when you’re going thru withdrawals.

Follow me on Yelp till then and I promise I’ll be peanut butta back. How bout you- any other PB fanatics out there??
