You are already a hero for completing the Hero’s Trail and what a better place to reflect and pray than with a spectacular view of Los Angeles?

From Runyon Canyons Website:

“Pray it Forward – One Step Closer to God!

The Runyon Canyon Prayer Box is on and going strong at the peak of Runyon Canyon, available for use by anyone at anytime. The Runyon Canyon Prayer Box was a gift from some of the visitors of Runyon Canyon and the Style Network’s Jeannie Mai. There was a short period where the Prayer Box had been dismantled and half way destroyed, there was also rumors that it was once again….gone. The truth of the matter is – the Runyon Canyon Prayer Box is at the top of Hero’s Peak and ready to accept your prayers and wishes. This is really an amazing contribution to the Runyon Canyon Community and we can’t thank the visitors of Runyon Canyon enough for this and especially Jeannie Mai for making it all happen.

The Runyon Canyon Prayer Box is open the same hours as Runyon Canyon Park – Dawn till Dusk.

When you conquer Hero’s Trail at Runyon Canyon, you will be greeted by the Hollywood Famous – Runyon Canyon Prayer Box. Make your wish NOW!!”

Prayer Box 4.0 Officially Up

This memorial day weekend was such a special series of days because finally,  Prayer Box 4.0 has been placed atop Runyon Canyon here in Hollywood, LA!! Yes, 4.0, because over 2 years, my box has taken 3 versions to survive to what it’s been updated into today. Thank you if you’ve followed my trail of prayer box postings through Twitter & Facebook — here I’ll explain how it ever first started.

7 years I moved to LA with my dream to celebrate people’s potential through television. I had a dinky lil car, a head full of ideas, and my entire wardrobe stuffed from my trunk to my front seat. (Imagine how long it took me to find that dang other shoe!) I realized fast that any one can get sucked into the hustle and bustle of this hectic city, and lose sight of your vision pretty quickly. I had to find a way to refuel and recharge each day. So I found Runyon Canyon, a popular hiking trail here in Hollywood, and started hiking it every day just to let out steam. Honestly? I was SO NOT in good shape back then, I could barely make it up the easy trail where puppies and lil cute kids would glide right past me. I used to trick the kids into looking for lizards so I could at least make it up past them. And yet, there was this ONE other trail, completely off the beaten path and so high and steep that you’d have to wait to get to the absolute top of the lower easy trail to even be able to see part of where it continued. That trail, I decided, was a symbol of where all my dreams and goals lay. It’s where I knew I had to work to get to, believe in myself to conquer, and eventually lead others to believe they could do it, too.

So fast fwd about 6 months. After my stubborn persistence, I eventually built my endurance to make it up that hill without stopping. But I realized it wasn’t just a good pair of shoes that got my butt up there– it was prayer. With each tiring step up that steep hill, I made that step a prayer to myself about the things I was struggling with. Relationships, financial stress, family strife, even just a bad day.. I pushed my way up through them all. When I stood at the top of that hill and looked down, I saw that is exactly how God sees us through life– we CAN make it. But that wasn’t even the best part! It was then that I realized when I felt prayed up, I had the energy to pray for everyone else I had on my heart that was facing struggles too. Family, friends, countries, the poor, the hurt..I prayed for em all on the way down. It was then I learned the anthem to mai life: Ya got time to stress? Ya got time to bless.

This process has impacted my life so much I decided to try to share it with others. So I put a small box with 2 holes cut out of it to the top of Runyon Canyon. This was version 1.0.

Within one week, there were about 30 or so prayers. Within a month, prayers were popping out of the little holes every time I came up to check it.

The box outgrew itself within 6 months. So I upgraded to this:

It was the first time the box had an enclosed trap door, and could place more paper and pens within it. The Prayer Box even officially made Fox 11 News, and even Jaeson’s Ma’s trek of 365 Days of Love. It was even Yelped! This box lasted a good few months, and I couldn’t have done it without the help of my dear friends Stavros and Grace to help hand build the box themselves.

Then came the day that this box was destroyed, as I blogged about it here. I was devastated at first, seeing hundreds prayers thrown over the hillside. Now looking back, I’m actually so thankful that it happened because it brought me to meet one of my dearest and inspiring friends ever, the Gentle Giant James.

As I blogged, finding James was a testimony to the hope I had taught myself to have in the beginning of this prayer box journey. So together, I envisioned while James designed what turned out to be Prayer Box 3.0. Built by the loving hands of Dan Ames connected by a dear fan, Kay, and beautifully handpainted by my own fashion designer Emiliano Moreno, the box came to life.

Together, this beautiful team you see above mounted and placed this wooden box into the ground with love. Not more than 24 hours later, this box was destroyed. Again, prayers scattered along the ground, box completely torn apart. I was in tears. I remember running down that hill after finding the box, with all the prayers I could hold clutched in my hands and pockets, so angry and hurt. Then I remembered my own motto- “Ya got time to stress? Ya got time to bless.” There were more prayers to be prayed forward- and it’s my faith that is abominable, not this box. So James, my husband Freddy, and myself started on Prayer Box 4.0.

After nearly 600 pounds of concrete, 100 lbs of steel, and more friends of the prayer box awaiting it’s return, Prayer Box 4.0 has officially been placed atop Runyon Canyon. Made of metal and love, James’ original design was put together by my dear friend Yosemite Steve. And the finishing handpainted touches? The talented visionary artist, Fabian Rodriguez. So together, this team and a crew of Prayer Box visitors helped carry the box to it’s home.

As you can see, Fabian did a beautiful job of covering the prayer box in light, love, and hope on all sides. There’s a chalkboard for anyone to write on the back, and in the two times that I’ve returned to the box in the last 3 days it’s been there, I’ve already had to fill the box with more paper.

I will be putting up a Facebook and Twitter page for the Prayerbox soon (thanks Angela!) and for every one of you here who have been praying up the box- THANK YOU!! Know that I would love to bring your prayers to the box so I can help you pray it forward. Send your prayers to jmail@iheartjeanniemai.com, and if you’d like a prayer in return include your return address. I’ll also be posting anonymous prayers here so we can keep them lifted together.

Blessings everyone. And SPECIAL THANKS to these individuals who truly made it happen.

Thank heaven for 2011

Day 1 blog for 1-1-11. I love it.

I’m so excited about 2011. As much as I always manage to have a positive refreshed attitude about each day I’m blessed with, I really love the new year because I believe every opportunity people can take to hit the “restart” button on their life, their relationships, their work and goals, the better. I often get asked how I stay so focused and upbeat. It’s actually pretty easy to feel so blessed when I expect nothing and appreciate everything! I really thank God for the health that I have to make it up Runyon, and the relationships in work and life that allow me to better myself each day. Life’s pretty awesome.
With that I had to share this prayer that I have folded up in my laptop case to read everyday. If you read my blog often, you know I believe hardcore in prayer.  This is kind of my restart button each time I read it. It’s biblical, so I’m sorry if it offends anyone, but I just had to share it because no matter what question I have about work, bad temptations, people, even food (!) it helps. Whatever I’m dealing with, this message leads me to the right answer I had inside myself the whole time.

Enjoy the new year everyone.

Each day…

I CHOOSE LOVE
No occasion justifies hatred;
no injustice warrants bitterness. I choose love.
Today I will love God and what God loves.

I CHOOSE JOY
I will invite God to be the God of circumstance.
I will refuse the temptation to be cynical…
the tool of the lazy thinker. I will refuse to see people as anything
less than human beings, created by God.
I will refuse to see any problem as anything less than an opportunity
to see God.

I CHOOSE PEACE
I will live forgiven. I will forgive so that I may live.

I CHOOSE PATIENCE
I will overlook the inconveniences of the world. Instead of choosing
the one who takes my place, I’ll invite him to do so.
Rather than complain that the wait is too long,
I will thank God for the moment to pray. Instead of clenching my fist
at new assignments, I will face them with joy and courage.

I CHOOSE KINDNESS
I will be kind to the poor, for they are alone.
Kind to the rich, for they are afraid.
And kind to the unkind, for such is how God has treated me.

I CHOOSE GOODNESS
I will go without a dollar before I take a dishonest one. I will be
overlooked before I will boast.
I will confesss before I will accuse. I choose goodness.

I CHOOSE FAITHFULNESS
Today I will keep my promises.
My debtors will not regret their trust. My associates will not
question my word. My wife will not question my love. And my children
will never fear that their father will not come home.

I CHOOSE GENTLENESS
Nothing is won by force. I choose to be gentle.
If I raise my voice may it be only in praise.
If I clench my fist, may it only be in prayer.
If I make a demand, may it only of myself.

I CHOOSE SELF-CONTROL
I am a spiritual being..
After this body is dead, my spirit will soar.
I refuse to let what will rot, rule the eternal.
I choose self-control. I will be drunk only by joy.
I will be impassioned only by my faith.
I will be influenced only by God.
I will be taught only by Christ.
I choose self-control.

Love, joy, peace, patience, and kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness, and self-control.
To these I commit my day.
If I succeed, I will give thanks.
If I fail, I will seek his grace.
And then, when this day is done,
I will place my head on my pillow
and rest.

Prayer Box: The Good News About Bad News…

..is that it leads you to better news.

Last week, a group of hope-filled people gathered together at 10 AM on Runyon Canyon to put up Prayer Box 3.0. Because words can’t even describe how the amazing way it all happened, I have this to show you instead:

I still can’t get the memory out of my head. Different people from all parts of the city coming together to help and watch faith in action. It couldn’t have been a more beautiful day watching the painted designs from Emiliano Moreno match the opening sky, and the actual sun painted by my brother Daniel peek out between the clouds. My favorite was filling the box with prayers from the old box, and having people who brought their children write out prayers to fill the new box.

On to the bad news. That night, I received prayers from NYC, to Hong Kong, and even South Africa to put into the box. The next day, no more than 24 hours later, I hiked up to the box to put these prayers in and found this:

Somebody had completely torn down the box. There were prayers strewn everywhere, and the sun ray was broken into pieces. It was the most horrible thing I could ever imagine being done. More than just the box being destroyed, I couldn’t believe all that love and time dedicated from our creators the Gentle Giant, James, our carpenter Dan from our friend Kay, and painters Emiliano and Daniel. Honestly, it’s taken awhile for me to get to a place where I could sit and write this blog about it. However, since then I have prayed peace and connection for the person who did this.

Ready for the better news? Our Gentle Giant, James, and I are already brainstorming how to bring the box back. There is always a reason for everything that happens, and I’m actually really anxious to see how this story unfolds. So keep sending me your prayers, and I promise the same way this box brought so many wonderful people together, it will bring an unexpected story that will bless us all.

Prayer Box is BUILT…and an inspirational painter has stepped forward.

I still can’t believe my story of finding James, designer of Prayer Box 3.0 took place just a few weeks ago. The next part to this story gets even better.

The night James W. Thompson and I met, we said the best grace over our yummy burgers and sweet potato fries: that this Prayer Box would be brought to life through a collaborative community effort. It wasn’t too long before James had an exact image in his mind of how this box could look, with even his own personal meaning:

During this time, a wonderful Twitter follower named Kay heard about my determination to make a new box. Kay stepped forward to twitter me that she had a wonderful friend who was interested in helping us make the box. To quote Kay, “Dan is a wonderful, interesting, talented man.” Talented…and insanely FAST! This passionate carpenter by day, blue-grass folk singer/musician by night` took James’ Prayer Box designs and built this below within days of receiving our request:

I KNOW. Wait for it. This story ain’t even done yet.

So if you all know me, you know I’m obsessed with fashion. What makes me even more wild is meeting incredible talent who are able to translate fantasy into wearable pieces. Mr. Emiliano Moreno is my living day fairy Godfather. Blessed with surreal vision and creativity, Emiliano has created one of a kind designs for me on my Style Network show “How Do I Look” that I would have to pinch myself to realize could be real.

With pieces like this, I’d be jealous to learn that God could pack more talent into this big heart. Well, now I’m Emiliano’s frenemy, after Emiliano Facebook messaged me that he not only designs, but is also an artist with oil painted murals on ceilings in estates, paintings of TLC hanging at the Met for the Exhibit, and works hung at the Metro Museum of Art in NYC. And is excited to bless us with his vision of painting our Prayer Box.

So here’s what you need to know about this story. It keeps getting better and better, and it all starts with a mustard seed of faith. When you KNOW in that pit of your stomach something is MEANT TO BE–chase it with everything you’ve got.

Emiliano is stepping on and the box is dated to be completed within 10 days. On the morning of Oct 2, this Prayer Box team will be hiking up to Runyon Canyon together to put this baby in place. And of course you’re all welcome to join! Reply back here if you’re interested to join and we’ll of course send you deets.

Pray it Forward yall.

The Prayer Box Destroyed, and I’m Fighting it Forward

You know what I don’t like?

Killjoys. Hopelessness. And the Negative Nancys of the world.

But you know what I really love?

Killjoys. Hopelessness. And the Negative Nancys of the world.

Here’s why: For every accomplishment in mai life, those naysayers had my panties so wadded into a bunch that standing around moping certainly didn’t straighten em out. Without these wonderful lil doom and gloomers, I would have never experienced what true joy, success, and faith feels like.

Which is why last week when Freddy and I decided to head up my routine hike up Runyon Canyon to fill my Prayer Box with paper and leave prayers for friends, this beautiful nightmare you’re about to watch occurred and has kicked my @$$ into high gear for the next few weeks.

Today marks the birthday of Prayer Box 3.0. The brainstorm begins. This has happened to me before, and it only gets better each and every time. So I’m looking for designers, carpenters, anyone with brilliant ideas, and of course prayers for the person that did this. Are you with me?? Bring it.

The Prayer Box makes it onto Jaeson Ma’s 365 days of Love

This Sunday I had the most amazing hike to my prayer box with my dear bro Jaeson Ma. He’s doing this awesome project called 365 days of Love where he does just that– discovers a new way to do an act of love every day. Well, I was so blessed to be a part of his project when he wanted to come hike with me to my Prayer Box! Here’s Jaeson’s take on our hike from his blog, www.JaesonMa.com:

How significant is prayer?

For this episode of 365 Days of LOVE, I hiked up Runyon Canyon with my good friend, Jeannie Mai, who is the beautiful and fashion-saavy host from The Style Network make-over show “How Do I Look?“. Jeanne was instrumental in setting up a prayer box on top of Runyon Canyon over a year ago. She first starting hiking to take out the frustrations of working in the entertainment industry and would just vent in prayer during the hike, but through those times, she began to see the value of prayer, of taking time every day to pray, as well as the importance of praying for others. I remember going up to the top of Runyon to install the box with her!

The Prayer Box advocates “taking a prayer” and “leaving a prayer” on a piece of paper and the response was amazing! The box filled up with prayers to a point that Jeannie had to hike up daily to bring more paper and empty out the box!

Its been a crazy journey for the box since that day and it was recently upgraded to Prayer Box 2.0 and also covered as a local special on FOX News– so we decided to hike back up there and pray for some prayer requests as an act of love.

Little did we know we would meet this amazing family that had gotten up at 7AM to drive over an hour to Runyon to drop off prayers and lift up others at the prayer box. Jeannie and I had an opportunity to listen to their compelling story and pray with them. I had an opportunity to give them an encouraging word and they seemed encouraged and even little Jordan gave 365 Days of LOVE/LOVE LIFE a shoutout!

Later, the family ended up posting this message on Jeannie’s site:

Thank you to you and Jaeson. You have no idea how you two “Lifted” the spirits of my family and myself. We just met this morning at the Prayer Box and… we all held hands and prayed together and cried. You two are a true gift from GOD!!! The words spoken by you and Jaeson have been with us all day long and will be there forever! You two were sent just in time for my little nephew Jordan. The impact you have on him and us is phenomenal!!! When I dropped Janet off, Jordan said to her,”Pray everyday!” We were all simply amazed! God makes no mistakes and bringing us to the canyon at that exact moment to meet and pray with you both was in his divine plan. We LOVE you both and pray that you continue to be blessed!”

I started out the morning ridiculously tired, but after a good hike and especially after seeing how an entire household was so positively affected by the power of prayer, I was ready for the day. Pray it forward!

Jaeson, thank you for Praying it Forward on your 365 adventures. And if you’re reading this I’d love to pray it fwd for you! Do send me a prayer here or at jmail@iheartjeanniemai.com so I can take you to the top. Heart ya!

Special shout out to No Man Left Behind and Constancia, a hiking team that takes one another up Runyon Canyon together!

PrayerBox on Fox 11 News

Thank you producer David Fleming, for announcing the video link so all that missed the feature about my PrayerBox can watch. And thank you to everyone who’s been sending forward so much love after seeing the piece. For all the prayers that have been sent, I’ll be taking it to the top of Runyon personally so keep em coming! Also,

for those of you with the great suggestions about a website for the box, I’m actually in the process of creating something even better. My own website is being worked on now, and besides fun fashion news and blog, it will house a specific section where prayers taken up to the box will be posted along with an area for those who can’t make it to the box to post your prayers on my wall.  So stay in touch by replying here so that I have your email for updates and keep sending me specific prayers. Until then, see you at the top as we Pray it Forward together.

What is my PrayerBox- on Fox 11 News TONIGHT

Wow oh wow. Before I get into the exciting news for the box, let me explain what it is.

For those of you who have followed my blog, you also know about my beloved Prayer Box I’ve placed at the steepest tip top of Runyon Canyon, a beautiful hillside hike here in Hollywood, California. I first had the vision for this box 2 years ago after an overwhelming sense of gratitude for each day that I’ve taken to hike to the top to pray and “reset” for the day ahead. I wondered if every other person who takes the time to hike these two tall mountains felt the same way after reaching the top… knowing that no matter how hard it feels, how badly you don’t feel like doing it, if you believe and put your best foot forward, you WILL.

Finally, my wonderful hubz made the first box and although it had some mysterious encounters, it had been there for almost a year as it filled up each day with prayers stuffed inside. There were so many prayers that I had to assign friends (thank you Grace and Eliot!) to come every other day if I was away to fill it with more paper and bring some prayers down to friends who can’t make it to the top. Anyone is always invited to send me prayers that I’ll take to the top, with a promise to have one from the box sent back from me. My dear friend Jaeson Mah also created an incredible movie that features the box in his documentary 1040, that features the prayer box. I can’t tell you how exciting it is to receive regular prayers from all over the world, my first from Ghana last week, different languages like Korean, Spanish, and even Hebrew- I even received a prayer from a 6 year old girl named Janie from Ohio who just started writing cursive!

Anyway, it came time that the box needed to be upgraded. In came the answer to my own prayer, Stavros, my dear friend who became the carpenter to bring the PrayerBox 2.0 to life. With prayers of patience and working hours into the night, the box was made, brought to Clairefoster who kicked in the dopest art skillz over the box, and bam. Here’s a pic him and  PB 2.o, once it was brought to the top.

Instructions are simple: Leave a prayer, take a prayer.

It’s been only a month that the box has been up and already it’s filling up again. Prayers of hope, peace, individual prayers for loved ones who are hurt, broken, or just in need of love. It’s incredible. So just recently, a fan of the box and brilliant writer/reporter/world traveler/foodie David Fleming, contacted me to cover a story about the box on Fox 11 News. I accepted, more than anything to share my faith that prayer is hope in action, and to encourage everyone to Pray it Forward. The PrayerBox story will air TONIGHT 5/25 10PM on Fox 11 News, and TOMORROW 5/26 morning.

I just realized I look like I’m rapping in this picture.

Anyway enjoy the story tonight, please do make it out to the box if you’re here in LA, or email me at jmail@iheartjeanniemai.com to get your prayers to the top. (Include mailing address if you’d like a prayer sent back.)

As a community together, we each can keep each other lifted in faith and love. Heart you guys. So freakin much :)

Mai Sensational Saturday

It all started with the best kinda kickstart- a romp up Runyon Canyon with my homeslice Melissa. Here’s why it was awesome. a) she didn’t flake (www.zipit.com Katie and Sarah. b) she let me know she was afraid of heights when we got here.

c) We made it to my prayer box to shove some luv someone’s way…and look adorable to take this.

After a quick VO session, I jammed across town to enjoy the next part of my super day- a photoshoot set up with my smashin in fashion studmuffin stylist Sam Russel. Not only was he styling me up with his saucy picks, but he was joined with an incredible team of professionals I have to blog about cuz these humble gents won’t pop their own collars. We’ve got Mr. Jeff Jones, an incredible artist who painted my face and rocked my locks like I’ve never seen, an adorable assistant James John Jetel who tended to us with his picture perfecting eye and warm hospitality, and a fabulous Eric Raptosh, a photographer extraordinaire who brought all the elements of my style, my emotions, his vision, to life.

Thank you gentlemen. These pictures barely describe all the wonderful work these boys put into the entire day, so you’ll just have to make it back here to see the fantastic pics. And guess what– I’m not the only one that can get blessed with Eric Raptosh’s wicked talented eye, you too can get a memorable shot of yourself, and for a terrific cause. Eric will be generously donating his time to perform Headshots For Haiti, a perfect opportunity for you talents (or anyone who just wants to have your own clicks for a cause) to get your headshots taken for a donated price. Sign up fast- as the offer is only tomorrow, Monday 2/15.

And finally what better way to top off the night than to gather together with all my fans for the Mai-never-censored, always edu-taining-Live Chat. I just posted the video here below for those of you that missed it, along with links for mai must-haves mentioned.

Best makeup book for ANY ethnic face and features: Asian Faces by Taylor Chang-Babaian. By far the BEST I’ve found to detail and outline every wonderful feature your face was sculpted to have.
