Special Blogger Breakfast in NYC

Yay! I can finally get this blog up! After such a long week of travels to one of my favest cities.. New York, I’m finally settled here in LA to catch up on all the moments. On April 7th I had the honor of hosting a wonderful gathering. Picture it- some of the east coast’s most passionate, talented writers all having an intimate breakfast with me. We shared dreams, purposes behind each blog- there was nothing left uncovered in Mai life and their vision. LOVED IT. Thank you to each blogger that made it out. Here’s a GREAT recap below (thank you Beautyandthefeast! )  and do follow these passionate writers through my Twitter and  Facebook fanpage to look out for Mai exclusive personal tips and giveaways with them!

Me with the fabulous Jeannie Mai!

Jeannie Mai is a woman after my own heart. The half-Vietnamese half-Chinese beauty started in the biz as a makeup artist for Alicia Keys and Christina Aguilera where it wasn’t long people started to take notice of her spunk and style. The dazzling fashionista now hosts the Style Network’s How Do I Look?. And PS, she’s the ultimate foodie!

Jeannie Mai

I had the pleasure to meet her for breakfast along with many other wonderful bloggers yesterday in Times Square at the Renaissance Hotel’s fab R Lounge. Can I just say, Jeannie seriously lights up a room. From the moment she walked in, her presence, friendliness, and positive energy was the most infectious (and refreshing) thing ever. While all eyes were on her as she waltzed in wearing a white cotton shirt from The Limited (one of her faves), sparkly black harem PRPS pants, Guess by Marciano shoes, and jewelry from Lia Sophia and Forever21, her focus was on everyone else. No, seriously.

The Renassaince Hotel R Lounge
She gave equal attention to everyone in attendance, generously complimenting everyone on their outfits and accessories, then started answering questions. Of course, being a fellow makeup and food aficionado, I had to grab her for a few questions myself (and yes, I asked about her trademark blue hair!):

Here’s another video of her telling her inspiring story…

More interesting facts I learned about Jeannie:

Food inspires her like woah. While people get their fashion inspiration from art, music, people, Mai swears her inspiration comes from food. She meets with chefs frequently and takes creative cues from the presentation on the dishes, whether it’s colors, sauces, or the way it’s laid out. She even told us a story of how she gave a tiramisu cake, with chocolate and white lacey designs, and played on the same idea in a lacey pencil skirt and chocolate brown outfit. Everyone loved the cake but they really loved her fashion sense!

The adorable Jeannie Mai

Three questions she asks people on the show to help her make them over without having them lose their style: (1) What part of your body do you love? (2) What’s a childhood story that you look back fondly at? (3) Name a celebrity, icon, friend, or person in your life whom you admire? All of these give her clues to the psyche of the person and a sense of their taste.

Two indie brands she’s really feeling right nowUnited Nude shoes and Victoria Roe.

Three words she would use to describe herself and her brand: Empower, bright, and thankful.

Ten things about this “foodiva” you HAVE to know: (1) she would rather wear last season’s Louboutins than be caught dead in a chain food store; (2) believes Sriracha can be more healing that holy water; (3) will remove friends from Facebook if they order their steak well done; (4) dreams of one day touring in a food truck…with hydraulics; (5) has converted eight vegans into loving sauteed foie gras; (6) hugs every chef she meets; (7) is addicted to internet food porn; (8) prays before every single meal; (9) has a crush on Alton Brown; (10) believes good food can silence rowdy children, mend any broken heart, and end all wars. AMEN.

Can you understand now why I love this woman so much?? Jeannie, thank you SO much for your time and advice. Loved speaking with you!

You can watch Jeannie Mai every Saturdays on “How Do I Look?” at 8PM AND 11PM EST on the Style Network. She also shares her tips and trick on her official blog, iheartjeanniemai.com.

Three ‘Jeannie Mai’ Ways to LOOK, FEEL.. and EAT Fantastic

In just 7 days, you can join me to the promise land of all 3 :)

This Saturday, November 6th, I will be hosting an event that brings awareness to an issue I feel strongly about: Human Trafficking. You might have heard me mention this at my last Today Show appearance. This event is called Freedom and Fashion, an annual showcase and trade show featuring companies and organizations doing the front line work to empower and educate this issue.  I love the energy events like this bring because I meet so many incredibly passionate, talented people with hands to heal women and children through their work! Tickets are on sale now here. I hope to see you there and this video explains more about it:

The very next day, Sunday November 7th,  I’m getting up early to strut my stuff at the 2010 Race for Research, a walk/race raising funds and awareness for brain tumor research. Last year I attended with the fabulous crew from my show How Do I Look on Style Network, and it was SO MUCH FUN! As much as I am honored to be involved in raising moola, is it bad that I’m UBER excited about the FOOD TRUCKS that will be involved in the event? Omg…no really. Are you ready for the menu of Food Trucks? We’ve got: No Reservations, Papa’s Tapas, India Jones, Lake Street Creamery, and Del’s Lemonade.

So here’s the fun-down on my weekend again. Hope yall can make it out, or in the very least do click to support. THANK YOU.

Saturday Nov. 6th:

Freedom and Fashion, Irvine CA, 6pm- 10pm

Sunday Nov. 7th:

Race for Research, Playa Del Rey CA, 8 AM- 12PM

Me, Gaga, and Mai Today Show Appearance.

I just arrived back from NYC to film this segment-posting here for all who missed. It’s always so much fun teaching women ways to work their wardrobe. My fave part of this was having our special guest Nicole back from this week’s episode of How Do I Look. Not only did she look Un. Be.LiEvAbly hot, but she was just so happy. So different from the woman I first met on our show. (See video to the right on blog homepage) I was elated to see her glow from feeling so gorgeous within. And um…watch her in this clip as she helps me help her get these looks on!

Thank you all for watching! Thank you Camilla and Tim for helping me pull this off together. Thank you Style, the always lovely Lindsay, and Dom for being the absolute host to make sure I had everything I need- esp rest. Thank you Nightlight Jewelry and LAS. Oh, and of course..my Gaga-licious sighting? Ok, there I was on Delta airlines red eye to NY, and in she comes to sit in my row, in a strait up red zip up velour tracksuit with a super million watt bedazzled jacket that could have lit up the city itself. No, this outfit was not cute, but as we all know Gaga makes it work like no other. She had full drag makeup on with lashes longer than mine (and if anyone knows me they know I put RuPaul to shame with my falsies.) Long story short, at the end of our flight I didn’t know if I should have even done this since it’s like 5 AM and nobody feels like talking- but I said, “Lady G, I just have to tell you thanks. Thank you for empowering young people with creativity and a message of love… And girl, I haven’t see velour like that since Hugh Hef and Britney’s bridal shower but wow u make it work.”  She died and gave me a hug with thanks. I love Gaga, man.

K I’m off to bed now for an Extra day tomorrow ! Heart you guys !~

Mai fave kind of Love.

What love looks like.

I met this kid at the Today show green room in NY. He was literally just sitting there, no idea whose he was, but he had this face. Right? So I go, “ohhhmygooshh..You are the most precious thing I’ve ever seen! Can I give you a hug?”

He looked up at me with from beneath these illegal eyelashes and ran at me with the most open arms – embracing me so hard I lost my breath. This is the picture before I fell over.

I pray everyone has love like this somewhere in their life. To give and to get. No walls, no holding back, no intro needed, and totally enuff to knock u off ur feet.

How to give the best kind of love? Step 1- Give.

Happy Saturday friends.

3 days till Today show segment–(9:30 AM Tues, Nov 3rd) Tonight is HALLOWEEN in NYC!

The countdown to Halloween.Haha, thanks to Ruthy for letting me “bow borrow”.

I don’t know what more to be excited about right now. Do you know where I’m headed? To New York City…on Halloween night. {Insert shriek!} Months ago I wrote a segment called”Wearapy”, how clothing can create OR deflate your each and every mood. After the wonderful help of my family at Style Network, and my power producers at How Do I Look, I’m headed to NY to bring Wearapy to life LIVE on Tuesday, Nov 3rd at 9:30 AM. (Go! Set the DVR!! I can wait.) See..THIS is why I DO count my blessings. Everyday. Starting off with #1:

Flying first class on my fave nightclub in the sky, Virgin Air.

2) stoked that I just inked a manager I’m very proud to call my own

3) that I managed to have the Halloween spirit and get a lil “ghouly girl” today with my smoky liner at 7Am this morn for my flight

4) that I’m going to my fave city NY ON HALLOWEEN (did I mention that?)

4) that I will be attending the annual one and only Chocolate Fair that is the biggest and baddest delicious delight ever to enter the US

5) that in between I’m also going to be doing jobs for Extra featuring new digs from YSL, and showing behind the scene styles with friends like Joe Zee, Creative director of Elle Mag

6) that I’m proud to say I LOVE deskside visits and will be seeing all the pretty powerhouse ladies at my fave mags to brainstorm some beautiful ideas

7) that I’m so happy to feel alive and healthy admist all the fall flu going around. :( Get well out there!)

This is the bestest week ever!  I’m going to countdown each day till Tuesday and share so much with you. I’m going to use my new Blackberry Tour camera to of course include you in as much as possible! Ok..before you do anything else..can we please sync our DVR’s at the same time? This Tues, Nov 3rd…9:30 AM, Today Show, Me with Natalie Morales. Don’t forget!! Ready, set…GO!

The most specialist thank you to everybody at Style Network and How Do I Look for taking such great care of me in this trip. I’ve been working everyday on camera these last few weeks, so without the help of these organized brains I would be stepping onto a plain to Egypt. Thank you all for taking my Wearapy idea and making it top notch for Today! Special wishes to Ashely to GET BETTER HON!

Happy Halloween everybody~!

(Click here for my last “TIps Today” segment that also rocked the haute house.)

We did 8 shows in two days, and it was super fun!! I’m absolutely amazed over how this woman does it. 2 boys at home, a hectic schedule on Today Show, and yet flawless and fun as ever hosting with me. As you can see here, she’s wicked playful too ;)

This goes out to all the mahhvalous Moms out there! Treat yourselves to a “Natalie Morales mani pedi” today!
