Wearapizing ATL.

I recently spoke in Atlanta for the Atlanta Mart that takes place several times a year all over the country. In my speaking engagement I talked about the reason I’m passionate about personal style- WEARAPY. If you follow me thru online or through any of my shows you’d know that Wearapy  is my idea to use color and textures to impact your mood and situations. Every day can be a different mood, a different combo of colors, and you’ll begin to experience an EMPOWERING control on your life all through the way u carry yourself.

In Atlanta I challenged everyone to dress purposefully in a color that best represents the message they want to convey. Look at this dollface here who tweeted me a picture of her a radiant ensemble around red.

Red is a color that can symbolize action, confidence, courage. The floral notes add a youthful fresh touch- this would be a perfect outfit to wear out shopping with friends, or even on a date to tell him you’re looking forward to making it a fun day!

Your turn! Tweet/ post on my Facebook page pics of you in your fave red pieces, love to see em!

How Color Affects Our Mood

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/11/27/how-color-affects-our-moo_n_1114790.html

By Rachel Grumman Bender For YouBeauty

It you think of the way we describe certain emotions (seeing red, feeling blue, green with envy), there’s no denying that color and mood are inextricably linked. Slip on a tailored LBD and you instantly feel chic and sexy or pop open a sunny yellow umbrella on a gloomy day and some of that sunniness will undoubtedly rub off on you.

There are several reasons why colors are able to influence how we feel. “We react on multiple levels of association with colors — there are social or culture levels as well as personal relationships with particular colors,” explains Leslie Harrington, executive director of The Color Association of The United States, which forecasts color trends. “You also have an innate reaction to color. For example, when you look at red, it does increase your heart rate. It is a stimulating color. This goes back to caveman days of fire and danger and alarm.”

You also have learned certain associations with color, such as red making your heart race since it’s linked with fire trucks and ambulances (in other words, alarm) or yellow having positive association simply because it was the color of your beloved grandmother’s kitchen. “As you get older, you become much more conscious of those learned reactions than the innate ones,” adds Harrington.

Jeannie Mai, who hosts “How Do I Look?” on the Style Network and who recently paired up with Yoplait Light to encourage women to make simple swaps (from giving your clothes a boost of color to swapping out unhealthy eating habits), is a firm believer in the ability of clothes to boost your mood. She calls it “wearapy.” “Therapists treat people with mood disorders,” she says. “I use clothing and texture to enhance people’s moods and their lives.

On a bleak day it would be so easy to throw on a pair of jeans and a slouchy sweater, but I throw on something from spring — a green mini skirt, fun fringe booties and a sweater with evening jewelry. That makes an impression on everyone around me, but it also makes me feel cute. And when you feel cute, you feel better. You can channel the different moods you want with different colors.”

Feel like changing your frame of mind for the better? Play around with these colors when picking out your clothes, makeup and accessories:

Seeing Red
Red is the hot, crazy girl of colors, evoking powerful emotions such as fear, anger and passion. “Red would be one of the most complicated colors,” says Harrington. Unlike, say, yellow, which is sunny whether it’s a pale or bright version of the shade, the mood red conveys changes dramatically when you lighten it (sweet and innocent pink) or darken it (sophisticated burgundy).

Although research shows that the best way for a single gal to attract a guy’s attention is to wear red, you may be garnering attention you don’t necessarily want. “There’s a reason they call it the red light district,” notes Harrington. Adds Andrew Elliot, Ph.D., professor of psychology at the University of Rochester: “We link red to passion because red is the color we exhibit on our skin when sexually interested — a red flush or blush.”

Rather than having your outfit scream “sex kitten” (unless that’s what you’re going for), the best way to rock this passion-producing color and get into a sexier frame of mind is by carrying a red clutch, donning a bright red polish on your nails (try Essie Well Red) or lining your lips in the right red. “Red lips can be your best accessory, especially if you’re wearing all black,” says Harrington. “You have to be confident to do it and have the right shade of red for your skintone.”

A Calming Case of the Blues
Need to chill out after a stressful day? Slip on something blue. “Psychologically, blue is the opposite of red — it lowers blood pressure,” says Harrington. “Red picks you up and blue takes you down, but not down to depression level.” That may be because if you look to nature, such as the sky and the ocean, blue conveys tranquility. That’s also what you project when wearing the shade. “I encourage women to wear blue when they want to create a calming essence,” says Mai. “Wear it on a first date — something turquoise or a light aqua sweater with a soft texture like cashmere. It makes a great a first impression and creates relaxation.”

Another beneficial time to make blue your go-to hue? If you’re going for a job interview or meeting your partner’s parents for the first time. “Blue is associated with trustworthiness, strength and dependability — hence, the blue power suit because it projects that image of dependability and trustworthiness,” says Harrington.

It’s Easy Being Green
From grass to leaves to other verdant vegetation, the color green is closely linked to the environment, which can put you in a relaxed or refreshed mood. “There is some tentative evidence emerging in the literature showing that green is relaxing because it is associated with growth and nature,” says Elliot. Green also looks good on every skin type and has a wide range of shades that allow you to modify your mood — from serious and sophisticated to fresh and bright.

“Green ranges from old traditional English libraries in a dark hunter green where you can sit down, concentrate and read to a spring-like yellow-based green, which symbolizes new birth or new growth — the beginning of something,” explains Harrington.

Anything-But-Mellow Yellow
Yellow carries both positive and negative connotations — from sunshine, which conveys a joyous, happy mood to jaundice and sickliness, according to Harrington. In Mai’s experience, wearing the bright, fun color helped her stand out and put people at ease. “Wearing yellow creates a very open atmosphere with people,” she says. “When I was a reporter on Extra, if I was going to meet a celebrity who was a bit standoffish I found that wearing yellow would bring a smile to their demeanor right away. It’s an inviting color.”

That said, going overkill on yellow can leave you looking like a walking banana so Harrington recommends investing in yellow accessories instead to give you that same uplifting boost, such as a bright yellow clutch, scarf or even a pale yellow blouse under a sweater or suit. But keep in mind that not everyone can pull off this bright shade. “Skin with yellow undertones have a hard time with the color,” says Harrington, “and blue undertones can only wear certain shades of yellow so it’s hard to find the shade that looks good on, compared to navy, which anyone can wear.”

Orange You Glad You Wore It
This highly popular color marries the sunniness of yellow with red’s depth. In fact, orange is the perfect substitute if you’re not comfortable seeing red. But the color is by no means ho-hum — orange evokes action. “Orange is much more of a casual, active color—it’s big in active wear—whereas red is much more sophisticated,” explains Harrington. The perky shade is your best bet when you want to rev yourself up so you can hit the gym or channel creativity for a work project. “Orange is said to stimulate enthusiasm and creativity,” says Mai. “It symbolizes vitality and endurance.”

It’s also the color to choose when you want to stand out without taking a big risk. That’s because orange is considered a little edgy without be too “out there.” “If you’re going to buy a pocketbook and it comes in red, orange and yellow, yellow will be the biggest statement while almost everyone has a red bag,” says Harrington. “Orange is in the middle. It says, ‘have a little more fun and be a little different but not too different. Because of that, you see a lot more orange colors showing up in cosmetics.”

The rich color is associated with royalty and luxury, according to Mai. “Anytime you need to feel confident and regal, such as for a job interview, wear purple,” she says. If you have a young-looking face and want to appear more sophisticated, make purple your go-to color to help you look more mature, suggests Mai.

Back in Black
Having a “fat day”? Slipping into something black makes you look five pounds slimmer — instantly improving your mood. “We all know what happens when you put on black jeans versus white jeans — it’s slimming,” says Harrington. But the darkest shade of all can affect how you feel in two other distinctly different ways: Wearing black can be a downer (think funerals) or make you feel trés chic (think Audrey Hepburn in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”). Although in old movies, the villain always wore black, over the years the color has become more associated with high class — black limousines, patent leather shoes and elegant black tie affairs, according to Harrington.

Black is clearly the go-to color when you want to look more regal and formal. “It can be very elegant”” says Mai. “Every woman needs an LBD. It plays everything else down so you stand out. It lets you shine.”

Chatting it up in Tastetable Magazine

Hi friends, ck out mai interview in Tastetable Magazine. I obvy heart chatting the trends, topics and travels and if you heart listening to it then you will love this interview.

JEANNIE MAI REDEFINES TASTE

T: Jeannie, when someone asks what you do for a living, what do you say?
JM: I say I’m a television personality, slash ambassador for Girl Power.
You’ve been quite busy over the last year. What are some of things on which you’ve been working?
T: You’ve been quite busy over the last year. What are some of things on which you’ve been working?
JM: Between shooting the 12th season of How Do I Look and adding a special episode in Australia, I’ve joined the ranks of Yoplait and Avon to encourage women to express their individuality and stay healthy at the same time. I shot what I think will be the best fashion reality show ever called Fashion Star for NBC starring Elle Macpherson, Nicole Richie, Jessica Simpson, and John Varvatos, right before flying out to Sao Paolo, Brazil to co-host Miss Universe. Between appearing on segments for the Today Show, The Doctor’s, and Nate Berkus, I wrapped the life changing series of Biggest Loser as the stylist for makeover week, meanwhile taking makeovers to a whole new level with Ellen Rakieten of Oprah, Ken Paves and Cat Deeley with her new pilot, then slid in a holiday special for Style Network starring myself and my adorable hubby, airing this Dec 11 if you’re able to catch it!
T: How was Brazil?
JM: Brazil was amazeballs! How can one country be that over populated by gorgeous women??? But the best thing about Brazil was the people. Everywhere I went I was completely swept off my feet from the hospitality and warmth of loving, proud Brazilians. It was truly an unforgettable experience.
T: How did you start hosting your show?
JM: I’ve been a familiar face on Style Network for many shows and appearances before HDIL. It was just perfect timing that the show decided to evolve and I was brought into place.
T: Like a lot of new show hosts, you probably did not expect it to last as long as it has. What do you think has fueled its longevity?
JM: Although “How Do I Look” has lasted a great time, it still uncovers something we need to learn more about: self worth. Many guests on my show just don’t understand how worthy they are to dress the way they deserve. Therefore they find themselves struggling in relationships and losing more self confidence by the second. HDIL not only reinforces these women on how to see themselves differently, but I take them through a tough, yet very real experience to get them to see what they can do to change their lives immediately.
T: Where do you see lifestyle television going, especially when you see the changes in television versus online broadcasts, as well as scores of new programs across networks?
JM: To be honest, makeover shows are not going to go anywhere because every single person could use a makeover. Secondly, We are obsessed with makeovers, we are constantly wanting to see what can become bigger, better and more beautiful. The only thing I do see possibly changing is that viewers are watching more thing online than onscreen, so we will probably see more programming streaming their shows online.
T: Do you have any designers that you believe we should keep our eye on?
JM: I have been lovin’ the fierce jewelry from Ben Amun, like these incredible Metal Spike Earrings on opensky.com. I also really am feeling Willow & Clay. They make super cute yet chic clothes that you can wear day or night! Luckily, You don’t have to search for the designers I love, because I bring them straight to you! If you go to opensky.com/jeanniemai you can get these fab items all in one place at a discount because you are friends with me!
T: We’ve noticed you like to make a statement with shoes. Is there a style philosophy behind that?
JM: I believe that shoes shouldn’t make you want to walk; they should make you want to strut! Therefore all of the shoes I wear describe my personality, the direction I’m heading and can hold the entire outfit on their own.
T: Any favorite foods (or drinks)?
JM: Mai fave foods are anything that have unique combos or twists, for examples a peanut butter sandwich with bacon or lemongrass inside of ice cream, I love how artistic chefs can get by fueling foods together in interesting ways we never tired. I also have a little gritty part of me that’s obsessed with tripe, tendons or pig ears. I think it’s the Asian in me. I say I’m like Andrew Zimmer. Except that it has to be cooked and that I’m a tad better dressed.
T: Is style a way of branding oneself?
JM: Style is absolutely a way of branding yourself, its been proven that people take 3 seconds or less to judge you based on your appearance. With that being said the colors, style and manner I which you present yourself will complexly deliver a message to the people who see you, you just want to make sure that message is what you meant to say.
T: What do you recommend to others building a brand?
JM: When it comes to branding yourself, first simply it by thinking about the three most unique traits about your personality and lifestyle that sets you apart form everyone else. Next figure out a trademark line, which would describe you in one sentence to anyone that asks. Begin to style yourself in the right colors and textures that makes your brand clear.
T: Is there a brand Jeannie Mai?
JM: The brand Jeannie Mai says. Fashionista, Foodiva, Wearapist. “Where my style and heart bring you full flavor.”
T: So what’s next?
JM: What I would like to do next is to teach wearapy across the world. Wearapy is my theory that clothing can enhance your mood in situations in your life. Through me women will learn the power how they can empower themselves and their life situations all in one look.

This time, it’s the celebs who will be asking ‘How do I look?’

As the host of Style Network’s How Do I Look?, we’re used to seeing “wearapist” Jeannie Mai critique the style of everyday people — but this weekend, she’ll be focusing on her lens on Hollywood! Jeannie will be joining Natalie Morales and Carson Daly as a co-host of NBC’s 2012 Golden Globes red carpet pre-show!

So I’m having a little trouble deciding which dress is best!  I need a lil help from you Bugs. I’m trying on many colors, but blue gives off a royal and regal energy, yet also can be calming and tranquil. That would be great to cheer these celebs on into the show! Out of these few, which do YOU bugs like the most?

New Year’s Resolutions- plus Mai Best Kept Beauty Secret

I’m so excited about this year ahead. One thing that I really enjoy doing is setting goals whether it’s New Year’s or Aug 17th. I’m kind of obsessed with goal setting because it feels so good to see yourself challenged, and to become better through the process no matter where you land.

Here’s a few goals I have intended for this year, and big thanks to all of YOU for being a part of mai journey! Here’s to a healthy 2012. Let me know on Twitter  or Like me on Facebook fanpage so I can let you know when these goodies come out :)

Style Network’s Jeannie Mai Shares Her Beauty Resolutions for 2012!

Do you need a fresh new look for 2012 or just a little tweak to your current beauty regime?

The Style network’s makeover guru, Jeannie Maishares her makeup bag resolutions and beauty predictions for the new year—think color, a quicker hair routine and a positive attitude. It’s an inspirational six-point plan to your most beautiful year ever!

1. “I’m obsessed with lips, what I call glitter lips. I think a woman’s lips can be the most powerful and attractive trait of a woman’s face. I’m excited to try new ways of decorating my own lips next year.”

2. “Color is power to me, which is why I’m known as a wearapist. Wearapy is what I consider wearing specific colors and textures to manipulate what you want in life. For example, green means life, orange is intelligent energy…I’d love to try those colors on lips to inject that into what I’m saying!”

3. “I have my shower AND makeup routine down so that I can be ready and out the door in 10 minutes! It’s hair that takes me forever. I have no idea how to do my own hair—so I’d love to get some tips from my very own hairstylist Norma Blaque for quick hairstyles in less than five minutes. If I learn I’ll shoot a video so you can learn too.”

4. “You know…I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’m totally noticing li’l things about my face that weren’t there before. And I’m gonna admit I haven’t been the most responsible with skin because I take advantage of being Asian and young. So next year, I’m totally going to be specific about my skincare regime and stick to it!”

5. “I get asked a lot of questions from aspiring fans about life and my career that I got too busy to answer last year. I still have them all saved in a section on my email called Just Ask Jeannie. Next year I’m committing to tackle those questions on a weekly basis for mai blog. So send em on in!”

6. “The one secret to beauty that I believe is important to have, no matter what time of the year, is an attitude of gratitude. There is absolutely nothing in the world that can age a person more than feelings of bitterness or contempt. So always have in your heart that stuff you can’t find in a bottle, like forgiveness, hope and love.”

Wearapy: How Wearing Different Colors Can Change Your Mood

by Rachel Grumman Bender

Seeing red. Feeling blue. Green with envy. There’s no denying that colors are inextricably linked with mood. Slip on a tailored LBD and you instantly feel chic and sexy or pop open a sunny yellow umbrella on a gloomy day and some of that sunniness will undoubtedly rub off on you.

There are several reasons why colors are able to influence how we feel. “We react on multiple levels of association with colors-there are social or culture levels as well as personal relationships with particular colors,” explains Leslie Harrington, executive director of The Color Association of The United States, which forecasts color trends.

On a bleak day it would be so easy to throw on a pair of jeans and a slouchy sweater, but I throw on something from spring-a green mini skirt, fun fringe booties and a sweater with evening jewelry.

Adds Andrew Elliot, Ph.D., professor of psychology at the University of Rochester: “We link red to passion because red is the color we exhibit on our skin when sexually interested-a red flush or blush.”

“Psychologically, blue is the opposite of red-it lowers blood pressure,” says Harrington. “Wear it on a first date-something turquoise or a light aqua sweater with a soft texture like cashmere. It makes a great a first impression and creates relaxation.”

Another beneficial time to make blue your go-to hue? If you’re going for a job interview or meeting your partner’s parents for the first time. “Blue is associated with trustworthiness, strength and dependability-hence, the blue power suit because it projects that image of dependability and trustworthiness,” says Harrington.

Green also looks good on every skin type and has a wide range of shades that allow you to modify your mood-from serious and sophisticated to fresh and bright.

“Green ranges from old traditional English libraries in a dark hunter green where you can sit down, concentrate and read to a spring-like yellow-based green, which symbolizes new birth or new growth-the beginning of something,” explains Harrington. Want to look relaxed, put together and sophisticated? Go for a rich dark green, such as Zara’s split sleeve dress in green. Want to perk up your peepers? Swipe on a shimmery green eye shadow such as MAC eye shadow in Humid.

Anything-But-Mellow Yellow

Yellow carries both positive and negative connotations-from sunshine, which conveys a joyous, happy mood to jaundice and sickliness, according to Harrington.

But the color is by no means ho-hum-orange evokes action. “Orange is much more of a casual, active color-it’s big in active wear-whereas red is much more sophisticated,” explains Harrington. The perky shade is your best bet when you want to rev yourself up so you can hit the gym (if the Nike Free 3.0 V3 women’s running shoe doesn’t make you want to break into a run, nothing will) or channel creativity for a work project.

Give yourself a boost by playing around with orange makeup. Pucker up to a red-orange lipstick such as MAC Pro Longwear Lipcreme in Good to Go or opt for a more subtle version with Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Intense Lipstick in Satin Bright Orange. Not ready to take a big plunge in the orange pool? Swipe a bright orange polish on your toes, such as Essie Clambake, to perk up your mood on chilly winter nights.

A Royally Purple Palette

The rich color is associated with royalty and luxury, according to Mai. “Anytime you need to feel confident and regal, such as for a job interview, wear purple,” she says. If you have a young-looking face and want to appear more sophisticated, make purple your go-to color to help you look more mature, suggests Mai. If you’re afraid of looking too grape-like, give yourself a more subtle touch of sophistication with purple eye shadow instead, such as Kimara Ahnert’s matte eye shadow in Wine, which is flattering on most skintones.

Back in Black

Having a “fat day”? Slipping into something black makes you look five pounds slimmer-instantly improving your mood. “We all know what happens when you put on black jeans versus white jeans-it’s slimming,” says Harrington. But the darkest shade of all can affect how you feel in two other distinctly different ways: Wearing black can be a downer (think funerals) or make you feel trés chic (think Audrey Hepburn in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”). Although in old movies, the villain always wore black, over the years the color has become more associated with high class-black limousines, patent leather shoes and elegant black tie affairs, according to Harrington.

Black is clearly the go-to color when you want to look more regal and formal. “It can be very elegant,” says Mai. “Every woman needs an LBD. It plays everything else down so you stand out. It lets you shine.”

While wearing black can make you feel polished and chic, Harrington suggests pairing it with a pop of color, such as wearing your favorite LBD with an eye-popping pair of magenta heels (slip on DV by Dolce Vita Phea Pump in Magenta Leather or rocking electric blue jeans with a fitted black blazer for a posh look with some panache.
