HDIL Followup on Very Special Guest – Genevieve

My fingers are gushing with excitement as I’m typing this blog out to you guys. Genevieve. The name alone just strikes the greatest feeling of joy when I think about the turning point Genevieve experienced on our show. The moment I met this woman, I was literally blown away by her beautiful, tender spirit. As host of How Do I Look, it’s always so hard for me to try to see someone the way they see themselves, because it’s usually completely stripped from the truth. Genevieve is the perfect example of that damaged perspective so many women experience from any situation or person from their past. My heart broke when Genevieve opened up to her sister at 0:33, because I TOTALLY notice that every time there’s a set of twins, people will distinguish them through this terrible description.

I’m excited for you guys to see Genevieve’s story, and more miracle makeover stories in our season coming ahead. This Saturday is the big premiere and I’m so excited! I’ll be in New York watching 3 hours ahead, so pls do tweet me @jeanniemai, or Facebook post me any of your thoughts. I love hearing from you all and appreciate so much that you’d watch to cheer these beautiful women along in their lives. We sistas gotta stick together, right? Amen!

April 2, Saturday at 8/7 c on Style Network. Will u be watching?

Favorite HDIL moment last season – Christine

Friends of my “I Heart” site, we’re only 6 days away from the official new season of How Do I Look? Can you believe it? I love Style Network’s fire cracking whip to launch out more fresh episodes to keep up with your rave reviews of how the season’s been. THANK YOU for all of your feedback on our HDIL Facebook Fan page and my Twitter@JeannieMai and Facebook Fanpage as well! I’m so excited about the episodes you’re about to see, because yes, we have even MORE outrageous O.M.G guests you won’t believe exist out there. But more importantly, with tough dressed guests come tough reality checks about what these women are going through. Take Christine here for example from last season. Christine is every definition of a SURVIVOR. Not only a breast cancer survivor herself, but a survivor who decides in this moment to pull herself away from the lies she’s been believing that she couldn’t feel sexy or even look feminine after her mastectomy. My favorite is  1:58…when you can see the lightbulb turn on for Christine. That SHE, too, can stand tall and strong like the women in front of her from here on out.

Please do tune in to Style Network this Sat, April 2 at 8/9c AND 11/12c. I’m like a vitamin. You can’t overdose from Jeannie Mai.

What’s your favorite How Do I Look moment?

Mai Missions: Food Truck Chasing #1

I have to apologize to all mai fellow foodies out there.

As a fashionista, I gotchu. Being up fashion finds; I pride myself on being on it like a bonnet. As a foodie, I’m last season’s kogi taco. Lately Los Angeles has been tearin it up with the food truck trend and I’ve been too holed up in my office at Extra or on set at How Do I Look to experience the endless creative concoctions of banana pudding, sweet potato fries, or Korea pub grub. But this week I made it happen! After a long day of work I threw 2 foodie friends, a hungry huntin hubz, and my trusty Twitter navigator in the car to go stalk out The Green Truck, AnhJoo LA (who are the shiz for replying back asap), and Tauro’s Taco’s. Some advice for any of you to take this on:

1. Eat light at each stop! Do share your portions so you can cram more trucks in :D

2. Partake in the festivities the trucks may be parked at. Art shows, music festivals, support the community, and sometimes free booze for everyone but the DD, (designated driver.)

3. Pack the car with lotsa napkins. If you’re Asian, or a mom, this is probably already covered.

4. Perfect flippin a beotch (U turn) to avoid causing chaos, or getting a ticket. You’ll almost always be flying past the truck looking for it. Or you’re too busy nom nomming the last stop you ate.

Special thanks to Jedmeister for bringing the grub alive with his gorilla style editing.

More tips to come on mai Food Truck Chase #2. Till then, enjoy!

MODERN FAMILY IS THE BEST SHOW EVER. (Next to How Do I Look.)

After my moment with Manny and Luke from ABC’s Modern Family, I was gayer than all the queens in West Hollywood. Oh Happy Gay Pride Day! Timmy.

How to Wear the Nautical Trend

Ahoy, style fans! The nautical trend is making some serious fashion waves for spring 2010.

With Chanel, Chloé, Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton showcasing classic nautical styles in their 2010 resort collections and a sea of spring runway looks from the likes of Tommy Hilfiger, Jean Paul Gaultier and DKNY featuring the trend, it’s time to anchor your wardrobe with stripes, buttons and all things sailor chic.

But how do you wear these styles without looking like you’re actually in the Navy?

“It’s about choosing one item as the main statement for the look,” celebrity stylist Britt Bardo (Jennifer Lopez, Cameron Diaz, Kate Hudson) tells StyleList. “You don’t want to wear a top and bottom that scream nautical. It then becomes overkill and doesn’t look effortless, and will look too much like a uniform.”

“Work a few pieces into your wardrobe subtly in order to keep this look from becoming costumey,” agrees Jeannie Mai, host of “How Do I Look?” on The Style Network. “No need to overdo it with colors, stripes, Dockers and anchor earrings.”

Here are more tips on how to shape up the nautical look:

Beyond the striped shirt:

 • Bardo suggests trying a jacket or blazer with gold metal buttons, blue and white striped shoes, a striped blazer paired with navy skirt or white shorts, a gold necklace with an anchor charm or striped belts as new ways to incorporate nautical pieces into your style routine.
 • “The great thing about this fashion trend is its ability to be styled multiple ways,” she says. “Pair classic navy and white stripes with red or yellow accessories for a twist.”
 • Karolyn Wangstad, vice president of trend direction for JCPenney, says to consider classics: walking shorts, jean jackets in white or indigo, oxford shirts, polo knits, wide-leg pants and even white cotton and eyelet. “Eyelet always goes with the seashore,” she says.

And about those stripes:

 • “Be mindful of where you place them,” Bardo says. “If you have a small chest, wearing a striped shirt can give you the appearance of a larger bust; conversely stripes worn across larger hips will only make them appear wider.”
 • Mai says in fashion, everything can be done in moderation. “Balance a striped top with a solid cardigan or wrap, and make sure to still show off your natural figure by using a belt or shrug to show off your silhouette around those stripes,” she says.
 • Wangstad says the key for curvier women is to avoid stripes that pull across the chest or the hip. “Choose a stripe in a woven or knit that is fluid and softly skims the body,” she says. “This season, many looks show the stripe layered under a navy blazer or a more casual jean jacket or shirt. By layering the stripe, the look is trend relevant with a hint of the stripe peaking out from beneath the blazer.”

Accessorize it:

 • “A brown leather belt with a striped dress gives it a bit of an earthy organic feel,” Bardo says. “And I love big chunky gold jewelry with the nautical look.”
 • Mai says rope accents are a fun and unique way to cinch in a waist or belt an over-sized shirt. “Navy and white stripes (paired) with a solid color of anything but white conveys originality,” she says. “And don’t forget hats. Have you seen yourself in a cute bucket hat tilted back with a low, side pony?”
 • Also, behold the button. “It’s so inexpensive to add your own unique buttons to any pea coat, skirt or even along a crisp button-up shirt,” Mai says. “You can find fun sailor-inspired buttons anywhere at a craft store, and can switch your favorite pieces up for the seasons.”

Mai Sensational Saturday

It all started with the best kinda kickstart- a romp up Runyon Canyon with my homeslice Melissa. Here’s why it was awesome. a) she didn’t flake (www.zipit.com Katie and Sarah. b) she let me know she was afraid of heights when we got here.

c) We made it to my prayer box to shove some luv someone’s way…and look adorable to take this.

After a quick VO session, I jammed across town to enjoy the next part of my super day- a photoshoot set up with my smashin in fashion studmuffin stylist Sam Russel. Not only was he styling me up with his saucy picks, but he was joined with an incredible team of professionals I have to blog about cuz these humble gents won’t pop their own collars. We’ve got Mr. Jeff Jones, an incredible artist who painted my face and rocked my locks like I’ve never seen, an adorable assistant James John Jetel who tended to us with his picture perfecting eye and warm hospitality, and a fabulous Eric Raptosh, a photographer extraordinaire who brought all the elements of my style, my emotions, his vision, to life.

Thank you gentlemen. These pictures barely describe all the wonderful work these boys put into the entire day, so you’ll just have to make it back here to see the fantastic pics. And guess what– I’m not the only one that can get blessed with Eric Raptosh’s wicked talented eye, you too can get a memorable shot of yourself, and for a terrific cause. Eric will be generously donating his time to perform Headshots For Haiti, a perfect opportunity for you talents (or anyone who just wants to have your own clicks for a cause) to get your headshots taken for a donated price. Sign up fast- as the offer is only tomorrow, Monday 2/15.

And finally what better way to top off the night than to gather together with all my fans for the Mai-never-censored, always edu-taining-Live Chat. I just posted the video here below for those of you that missed it, along with links for mai must-haves mentioned.

Best makeup book for ANY ethnic face and features: Asian Faces by Taylor Chang-Babaian. By far the BEST I’ve found to detail and outline every wonderful feature your face was sculpted to have.

Details for Live Chat tomorrow night 9PM- and last week’s video topics.

I can’t believe on my last Live Chat we were arguing about which was better- Slumdog or Avatar.
Anyway, I had the bomb DigGity time chatting with all you guys Saturday night!! (VIDEO TO THE CHAT BELOW)

My fave was discussing what features we ladies fuss over most, of course what features the boys fuss over us most, (haha), discovering each other’s love languages, (I guess I do have a lil more “quality time” in me besides “acts of service!”), and being able to dish what you all thought about Sat night’s episode. . I had the best time with you guys and can’t wait for our next chat! Thanks especially for all my fans in Atlanta, San Diego, Chicago, New York, Las Vegas, and even Pennsylvania for spending your night with me. Below are the essentials you’ll need in my next week’s chat as I will be teaching you the tricks to 2 very important steps to sexy: a good strut and sassy lashes :)

Ladies, for next Live Chat SAT, 2/13 at 9pm/11central with me you’ll need:
1. Ardell Lashes of your choice (mai faves are #102, 120, and the demis. Avoid blunt cut lashes, go for angled lashes that are full and range from short to long)
2. DUO Lash Adhesive in clear or black
3. Scissors
4. a great pair of your favorite heels!
Come to my chat prepared with your lashes coated with mascara and curled.
5. Some really nice things to say about my episode with my frenemy Forest.

Here are links that I referenced in Live Chat #2:
- The 5 Love Languages- I strongly believe if everyone in this world read this book, we’d all be in harmony like the Novi in Avatar.

- My fabu nutritionist who’s educated me on eating right for my body type so that I’m not dieting, but LOVING what I eat that my body fuels from best. Contact her, she’s VERY amazing just to get an understanding of what you need!
- Cloud9living.com This is the site I most recommend for great Valentine gift ideas, whether you order from them OR, even better, get clever yourself and build from these ideas for ur shnookems.

If there’s anything else I forgot, plz message me and let me know! Enjoy the video of my chat here. Be forewarned I have no idea how to edit this thing so don’t feel like u have to watch the whole thing, but the middle and the ends are my favorite. (Like a good cupcake!)

Until next chat Sat 2/13, “I see you” :) Love u guys.

How can I Pray it Forward with you?

Oh my gosh, I had the most amazing weekend I have to share with you guys.

If you live here in LA you know that it was raining like crazy for a hot second. Last week for like 5 days straight- . And everyday I was envisioning my beloved lil surviving prayer box up on that hill by itself getting soaked, possibly even blown off the hill. (I have a very dramatic imagination.) Well, I went up there right when the rain stopped for a second to check on the box, and yes it was safe! So I filled it up with fresh paper and new pens. That was 4 days ago.

Today, I hiked up to the top just to drop off some prayers (Kelly, prayin for your job situation! and my dear friend Rosa, need a miracle for her health.) Again, this is FOUR days later, and watch this video to see what I found!

THANK YOU to friends who make it to Runyon to Pray it Forward! I hope I see you there someday. It’s simple: all u have to do is leave a prayer, then take a prayer. And to those who can’t make it, do send your prayers to jmail@iheartjeanniemai.com and I’ll get it in.

(Also don’t forget to join me THIS SAT, 2/6, for my Live Chat after my show! Here’s how: http://bit.ly/bOp2SX)
